At my university, there is a program that assists foreign students in learning and speaking English. This program is always looking for volunteers, so I decided to join and help out. Besides, I've always enjoyed meeting new people from far off lands, sharing stories about the differences of our cultures.
Anyway, I was paired up with a young, Chinese woman who needed to work on her conversational English. I taught her a couple of useful phrases, like: "Sucky, sucky. Five Dollar" and "Me so horny, me love you long time". She's a quick learner and got the phrases down pat pretty quick.
Yet, when the program director found out about this, she was livid. She threatened to have me expelled and I was immediately removed from this English-speaking program. Interesting thing is that when the Chinese girl found out what the phrases meant, she thought they were funny. Why is everyone else so up tight?

Teaching her phrases in broken English when you were supposed to be helping her speak grammatically is wrong in and of itself. But the phrases you chose were even worse - you are not just someone teaching a foreigner to speak proper English. You were someone approved by the school to perform a service to other students in a school-operated program. What you did would be considered sexual harrassment in the work world and you could have been fired on the spot. She had no idea what it was that you were teaching her, and the fact that you call them "useful phrases" shows that you have no sense of what is decent or right. Waht if she had used these phrases with realives of hers who knew what they meant? What do you think they would have thought of the school where she learned them? The director was right to do what she did. Everything you do reflects on the school - both the positive and the negative. Unfortunately, the negatives always stand out far more. Which do you think people will be more likely to remember - that you helped students learn English, or taught them "useful" phrases?
Would you make jokes about someone's dead relative at their funeral? And then wonder why people were so uptight? Why do you have no understanding that what you did was completely inappropriate? This was not a friend of yours that you were pulling a prank on. This was a student in a school program that you took advantage of for your own amusement. By your own admission she had no idea what you were teaching her, and even if she thought it was funny (who knows how funny she really thought it was) you took advantage of her ignorance and that reflects badly on the school.

i don't think it's funny either with these reason.
1. Any education requires decency. Especially, learning other languages is supposed to be the key to enter the whole society. If it's a joke, you have to tell her what it means at the same time.
2. It must be funny for you to hear a young Asian girl say those phrases in her slight accent...that's insulting and disgusting!
3. Man and woman also have the different culture. Between different cultures, you always have to take care not to occur misunderstandings. Your little joke won't help her in anyway. She thought those were funny? I doubt it. She still doesn't know what you did to her. It was quite fair for you being kicked out.
I want you to be more careful when you talk to others so that everybody will understands your helping, caring personality as well as your sense of humor.

yes I believe it totally that you got into trouble over this -and so you should. If nothing else it is plain ignorant and racist and insulting - you took advantage of this woman- and I am quite sure that even if she said she thought it was funny- deep down she was probably offended or at the least highly embarrassed. By you doing this it just goes to show that you lack understanding and respect for another culture-- it also shows a decided lack of maturity that you have to to revert to crude sexual phrases to amuse yourself at other people's expense--try to understand that other cultures and races are no better or worse than your own- we are all human beings on this planet together.

You don't say where this happened, but if it was in the U.S. I am not surprised that you got into trouble, seeing that in this day and age the puritanical hate of and aversion towards anything sexual is promoted and encouraged by the Government with the active support and encouragement of the Religious Right.

why are they wasting an expensive college education on you??? I am chinese and I am greatly offended by what you did. it doesn't matter if the chinese student thought it was funny. Next time when I get to teach an american to speak conversational manderin, I will teach them how to say" I am a stinky big nosed, idiotic american, we stupid" how would you feel about it?

Good for you. I am glad that Collages are standing and taking care of people like you. There are here willing to learn our language and you want to teach them trash like that. Maybe next you will think about what you say to someone.

If you are too immature to know that what you did was disgusting maybe you should seek professional advice?

Ha! That's great. The university's program director needs to get a sense of humor and to masturbate or something to let loose. I was an ESL volunteer in college, too, and taught my Venezuelan subject how to say all the body parts... all of 'em... lessons taught in my bed back at my apartment. He was a good student.

it's hilarious. if she was not offended and thought it was funny then director should not be such an uptight a--hole, she is probably really just covering her but so she doesn't get in trouble. if she had not made a big deal about it she wouldn't have had any problems...
