I know she pays rent etc... I'm not sure if she expects a tip or not - she can just charge the amount she wants.

Does she do a good job?

If the answer is yes, then by all means, tip her!

Just because she is the owner, it doesn't mean that she doesn't deserve to be appreciated for the work that she does. That's what a tip is, showing appreciation for services rendered. Also, think about it in this sense: If she is the owner, she is probably the hardest working one there. She's not only doing her share on the service end (which in hairdressing, this is not always the case!), but she's also doing most, if not all, of the behind-the-scenes work. Not to mention, she's obviously well established in her field if she's the owner of the salon. You're probably getting a better service from her than from somebody else working for her! In high end salons, it is considered a great privelege to be worked on by the owner, and usually it costs more.

She absolutely deserves a tip if she performed a service on you that you feel was done to your satisfaction. Her status in the salon makes no difference in that matter.

No you shouldn't. I am sure some people already do but technically an owner is not supposed to take tips. Tips is legally only for those who do jobs listed under tipped services for that particular state. Mostly its servers in restaurants and hairdressers, Hotel workers and so forth.. The Owner under any circumastances will never fall into that category.

I have heard that you should not tip the owner...because they are the owner and they do get the whole price for the service. However, I feel that if you think they do a good/great job and you are satisfied then a tip should be given in appreciation for their job well done.

If the owner did your hair from start to finish, then "Yes" you should tip.

Tip at the standard rate of 15%. She should get no more and no less than the other salon staff who cut and style hair.

If others were involved in your fabulous look, then consider "tip splitting," ensuring that the person who cut and styled the hair receives the majority of the tip split.
