I'll bet even Martha Stewart licks her fingers when she is all alone.

You're silly! If nobody sees you doing it, there is nobody there to care what you're doing. Even if somebody did see you do it -- it's YOUR house and you're just casually enjoying a bowl of ice cream. If someone gives you a hard time, just offer him some ice cream and be done with it.

The tree/forest thing doesn't really work here. Sounds are vibrations that occur whether or not you are there to hear them. It's called physics. Kinda like a whistle that is too high-pitched for you to hear it. It still makes a sound, even though YOU can't hear it.

No, etiquette or the lack thereof doesn't make a person good or bad, it just makes interacting with others easier. Etiquette changes between societies, cultures, and even between in small groups in a given culture.

Etiquette is the rules of social interaction. Therefore it implies that other people are around. When you are alone, there is no such thing as etiquette.
So there's no wrong in lickin' the bowl!

I don't think it's a problem.

I cut my toenails, scratch myself and go to the bathroom (among OTHER things) in private, but I wouldn't do those things at work, on the street or in front of the whole family at the Thanksgiving dinner table.

Everyone needs their private moments.

Etiquette only applies in your relationships with other people. You can be as disgusting as you like when you're alone because no one suffers.

Well, they better not count it as bad-I don't see anything wrong with being a pig. Plus, I have manners and use them when appropriate otherwise it's fiesta pig time!
