Luna is a family name.
When you say The Lunas (meaning: the Luna family) it becomes Los Lunas, irrespective of the meaning of the word Luna.
A traditional family is always composed of at least one male and one female. In Spanish the rule for a mixed group is that in the plural the masculine form is to be used.
Hence: LOS LUNAS.

Yep, family name I guess... ; Los Lunas. That's correct in that case.

By the way, Los Angeles is totally correct (cos Angeles is masculine).

Probably for the same reason the American California town of Angles uses Los, instead of Las.

Maybe because they just felt like it.
