The easiest way is to blanch it first. Some people say that you should carefully cut an X at the bottom of the tomato before you put it into the watter. To blanch a tomato you just place it into boiling water for a very short period of time. the larger the tomato or the greener it is the longer it will need to stay in. Never leave it in longer than a minute, it will start to cook. After you take the tomato out of the water just grab one of the pieces of skin that will pull a way from the tomato where the X was cut and pull. It may not take it all off on the first try but you have 4 pieces of skin to work with and eventually it will all come off.

My grandmother taught me how to do that using one of the burners in a stove:

First, put a fork through the tomato and hold it slightly above the fire. When the skin starts to contract and rip, take the tomato away and leave it alone in a plate for a few minutes.

The skin not only comes off easily this way but this method also gives a "roasted" flavor to the tomato.

Blanch it in boiling water for 30 sec. to 1 min (depending on the size and ripeness) then put it into an ice bath and the peel should come off easily

It is actually very easy, boil a pan of water drop the tomato in (when it is boiling) for a couple of seconds, then take it out and peel-it doesn't heat it up and the skin comes off so easily.

it would depend on what you were going to do with the tomato if it is for sauces canning and so on i would dip it in boiling water an remove the skin that way..if you want it to stay raw as in say taco sauce i would use a sharp knife and peel it as i would a potato or apple...

Boil a pot of water and then gently drop the tomatoes into the pot.
The skins will crack within 2 minutes and then remove, place in cold water and the just pull the skins right off.
