understand? The non Christians go on about "proof" of God, when that isn't the point. But even the things they are supposed to "know" about like evolution -- noone says we evolved from monkeys -- or brainwashing -- who among us was locked in a room until we professed our acquiescence -- they don't seem to really understand. It is sad that there are so many attention-needers when so much good could be done on this sort of board.
Whether you choose to come to Jesus or not, some mutual understanding would be better than just baiting each other.

Yes, I agree. But they are just ranting for the most part--many are angry and just want to piss people off. I do it often--I will just write insulting and angry answers just to vent. Just don't respond, because that's what they want.

Many people like to discuss topics, and put forth their opinions, even if they are not experts on the subject. And I think that is a good thing, because it allows for more perspectives.

I do think that people should not state as absolute what they haven't bothered to research. And that people should answer the question asked, rather than just taking the opportunity to preach or rant.

But I'll also take exception your two examples. Modern adaptive genetics does say that we shared ancestors with many of the current primate species, which using casual language does mean evolving from monkeys.

And I'll bet most people in the US had the experience of being locked in a room until they acquiesced. It's called grade school, and Sunday School, and parental discipline. Authority and containment were used to force at least outward behavior, if not total belief. And that's brainwashing, even if not the most extreme forms of it.

Well then stop the baiting. Both Christians and non-Christians are here going on about proofs of God endlessly.

The non-theists here constantly have to correct the fundmentalist lie that evolution says humans evolved from monkeys when it says no such thing. And no atheist I've seen has said Chrstians were locked in a room until they acquiesced. What most have said, including me, is that the ideas of theism were presented to us from infancy and inculcated into our belief systems long before we'd had any instruction in science, philosphy, comparative religion, logic, critical thinking, and we hadn't the tools to examine the reasonableness of the claims, nor in most cases were allowed even to question those claims without punishment and disapproval. Do you really dispute that?

Your post contains straw men arguments verging on ad hominem against non-theists. Without these the sincerity of your appeal would be more compelling.

Yeah, silly us non-Christians. Wanting proof of, or at least reasons for your God based in reality for your convictions.

You're right -- nobody suggests we evolved from monkeys. They are a different branch of primates. We evolved from a common ancestor, closer to apes.

So much good on this board? Are you kidding me? Do you seriously think you're going to get serious philosophical discussion about religion when people just get to go back and forth like this?

I disagree -- I think the baiting is quite entertaining. Why else would people lurk here? Theists have this bizzare logic that I simply can't turn away from. They try and bait non-theists with theistic logic, then the non-theists laugh at them. Then the non-theists pose even more poignant questions and nobody really understands the point they're making.

Yay YA!

When we mention brain washing it is you that we are refering to. Not ourselves we are the enlightened ones that see no magical being controlling our destiny, There is nothing special about the rise and fall of the sun each day. No one made us in their image. You are just simply a weak minded fool and were probably bullied at school and had god beaten into you at home. When I was little I had an imaginary friend but I grew out of that pretty soon. Unfortunatly some people still suck their thumbs and believe in a higher being. What a load of rubbish. Religion has caused almost all to wars on this planet and has been used as a shield for some of the most horrific attrosoties. That is your god that is the gentle kind god. You are all thick and need to open your eyes the bible is just a storey book as are every opther religious book out there. In this day and age there is no such thing as god. I dont need proof of existance to know that he is not there. I just know!!!!

The only people I see saying that we came from monkeys are the creationists who won't bother reading a book about evolution. Most of the Atheists and Agnostics- at least the smart ones- seem to know a great deal about both science and religion, some know even more than those of that religion seem to. That's what I've seen, anyway.

Aren't you doing the same exact thing? Putting other people down who don't believe what you do? Those of us who believe in evolution don't think we evolved from monkeys just that we evolved. Maybe you need to do a little more research into the subject before you start bashing the "non-christians".

I think atheists understand very well: believers don't think, they just believe. When asked for a rational defense of their belief, they just bible spout or say belief doesn't work like that. Once you've opted out of the rational, there isn't much to talk about.

I was a christian for the majority of my life.

and I would gladly put my knowledge of christianity and the bible up against most christians here any day.

So I do feel qualified to judge both sides of this issue.
