As long as he has you listed on the policy, it's ok. The car is what gets insured, not the person.

If you were in an accident, his insurance would confirm with him that you have permissive use for the vehicle and then assert whatever coverage the vehicle already has (the insurance follows the car). If you live with him he should notify his insurance that you drive his car. If he doesn't and you are involved in an accident, the insurance would use whatever coverage is on the vehicle, then one of two things would happen. They'd ask for him to send an exclusion letter which expressly states you will never drive the vehicle (this keeps them from having to pay any other claims, they already know you drive the car at this point), or they make him add you and pay an additional premium. Both are pretty bad news and can result in premium increases for dad...so it's better to be safe and get you added to that policy!

If the vehicle has insurance on it, and you are considered an insured under the policye (you are a permissive user or resident relative of the household) then there will be coverage for the accident. You should get yourself listed on the policy now as a principal user because when you have that accident, the insurance company will do it anyway and rate the policy for you.

Do you live with your father? If so he needs to add you as a driver. All people who live in the same household should be covered under one policy unless a person has their own insurance with another company. If you don't live with him then he doesn't have to add you, as long as you have permission to drive the car yes you will be covered

If you drive his vehicle frequently, you need to either be listed as a driver on his policy or you need to purchase non-owners insurance, which will cover you as a driver on any vehicle. But in most cases, as long as you have permission to operate the vehicle, it will be covered by the vehicle owner's policy if it is involved in an accident.

If you are not on his policy you are driving Illegally. If you have an accident you will be considered an Un-Insured driver and be charged as such. Ignorance according to the law is not an excuse.

Check his policy to see if you are included as an additional driver (or if there is wording as to "family members included"). Otherwise, unless you specifically named on the policy, you are not covered.

Then he should add you to his insurance to make sure you are covered too. Maybe you can pay the difference yourself.
