There's nothing wrong with being respectful. A handshake is the perfect greeting in any language. However, the issue of the offensive looks is interesting....
If it's someone that has been introduced to you for the first time, a firm handshake and a smile will do just fine. If it's a good friend, a mutual friend and the like, don't be afraid to modify your handshake a little; handshake with a peck on the cheek. It's a small gesture, but it means a lot. It's a gesture of closeness, acceptance and bonding. It shows maturity and respect. A small hug is perfectly acceptable, as long as it doesn't evolve into full-on embrace and kissing with tounges.

A handshake is fine. If it's someone you've known for a long time, then you might want to give them a hug. I would be more worried about respecting youw wife, then worrying about what other women think.

depends on the social and customary method though. in a country where friends are comfortable with hugs and closeness, it is rude. and even if not coutries, closer friends are anticipated to have the touchy greetings/salutations. so check that it is normally done, and go with the flow. there is nothing wrong with the hugs and cheek kisses as some cultures adopt. take France for example. when familiar, girls/women/wives greet the opposite sex with cheek kisses, etc. so this is normal depending on the level of familiarity. even guys do hugz nowadays, as it is quite normal already.

Take a cue from your wife. Does she hug your/her male friends? If she does, then feel free do do the same. I have some friend who I hug and kiss, and some who I just nod too. It also has to do with your relationship with the female.

i think its respectful to give a handshake bcuz if u have a wife that just shows ur respecting her .. the other girls shud know ur married .. if not .. then u shud make it clear to them that u are ... they clearly like u more than a frend to be expecting a hug .. but i think its rlly respectful if u give handshakes .. thumbs up

I dont know, some people are weird about this.....I say whatever you are comfortable with. I think it is respecting others space, you don't want to come off the wrong way. Us girls, we tend to be huggers, don't worry about it. Stay in your comfort zone, nothing wrong with that!

I think its awesome that you would respect your wife that way. Keep it up. If your female friends don't like it tough.
