I look at it at 2 different stages. At the point of entry to the workforce, College degree is really helpful and beneficial. It acts as a ticket of entry. on top of that, you really have to be able to promote yourself and your degree well to be noticed.

The second stage is when you have already entered the workforce. This is the time to prove your ability to carry out the job and finish the task given with less or if not much delays. At this point, college degree is no longer play a crucial factor as people tend to see your performance rather than your past credentials. Street smartness is more valuable in such a case but sometimes higher college degree is necessary to boost up your profile so that you will have a bigger chance to climb the corporate ladder and even update ur knowledge and theoretical skills.

To sum it up, Both are equally important as each aspect is dominant in different stages. In the end, if you can have both, you are the sole winner.

This question is interesting because it depends where you are comming from. In the United States at least people make a big deal of street smarts. It depends what field you are getting into. The Scientific/Eng fields don't require that much street smarts. Meaning you can get into positions where you have little involvement with people. These are the positions that require the most demand academically and they pay the most. The Liberal art positions however do require some knowledge of street smarts. With the exception of the Medical Field which requires a much larger level of expertise and pays more or about the same as Sci/eng. However, with the Medical field you do need some knowledge of street smarts. In the foreign counteries however you will never hear of anybody talking about street smarts. Education is highly regarded. In the US it is not really the case. Unfortunatley, nowadays you don't have to go to college to make good money. I'm not saying that you will be sucsessfull in that situation though. I think most of the people who ponder upon street smarts being better then college degree are the one's who don't have, isn't planning to have or is not in the proper mindset to have a higher education.....

in today`s workforce once u have adegree u automatically r enclined to a higher salary than the person without. however being a degree holder does not qualify u as the better person to deal with ur peers and coworkers this is where street smart comes in, u r not as focused on the fact that u have a degree instead u try to do ur best at what ever u r called upon to do with the knowing that there is no degree there is an additional interest in wanting to know more , there is more or likely patience on ur part because u want to prove to everyone else that u don`t have to have degree to be smart and work as efficiently or even better than the next person.i must however commend the persons who r both blessed with overwhelming common sense as well as a degree right away u r ahead of the game, i think that this creates a more well rounded individual and it makes u at all times at an advantage .good luck! love and good

Salary wise? The degree, hands down.

It doesn't mean a degree will guarantee a high income. It means that if you look at who earns the biggest bucks at any career outside of entertainment, you will find the degree hanging on the wall, behind him.

Street smarts will only carry a person so far. It is rare, VERY rare to find 6 and 7 figure incomes for people without degrees.

Now days, skilled labor can pull down 70 and 90 thousand a year, and THAT can be pretty comfortable. But the guy that tells the skilled laborer where to go and what to do when he gets there has that degree to back up what he says.

I get confused about it, because everybody tells you that you have to have that degree, yet there are hordes of BA's and BS's running around doing jobs an eighth-grader could do, and making
very little. The market is getting more and more saturated with Bachelor's degree people all the time. They say that Employers will automatically discard you if you don't have that Bachelors, yet I don't thlnk it is always true. Some people are saying they are beginning to look more at real skills and expertise rather than just trusting that degree. I think that time will play this all out and we will see what really works, but in the meantime people should probably get some certified skills and specialized associate degrees.

In the work force - college degree

College degrees are over rated. There are now so many colleges offering so many very specified majors, that they have become nothing more than glorified vocational schools. There was a time when a person went to college to broaden their mind, sharpen their critical thinking, increase their intellect and master the spoken and written word.Skills that could have been applied to any carreer.

Unfortunately, it usually takes a college degree to get your foot in the door these days, but the ones who actually know what they are doing are the ones who learned the hard way.

Depends on what you are asking about. People with college degrees tend to command higher salaries, but people with street smarts tend to be better in dealing with people. I know those are huge generalizations.

I think it also depends on what part of the work force your talking about, if your a blue collard worker than no your co-workers could care less.on the other hand, if you get in to the corporate world you can't get in with out a degree. accept for sales, then they want both
