With older people, it could well be a sign of the onset of Alzheimer's:
The Alzheimer’s Association, the world leader in
Alzheimer research and support, has developed a
checklist of common symptoms to help recognize
the warning signs of Alzheimer’s disease.
1
Memory loss
2
Difficulty performing familiar tasks
3
Problems with language
4
Disorientation to time and place
5
Poor or decreased judgment
6
Problems with abstract thinking
7
Misplacing things
8
Changes in mood or behavior
9
Changes in personality
10
Loss of initiative
That was one of the symptoms my Dad displayed.

I'm a writer, and sometimes this happens to me. I have days that I can speak fluently and words roll off my tongue, and then there are the days when I can't even think of a common word. It's just human, I think.
