666—Not Just a Puzzle
"Nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark, the name of the wild beast or the number of its name. Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man's number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six."—Revelation 13:17, 18.

FEW Bible topics have evoked as much interest and concern as the prophecy about the mysterious mark, or name, of "the wild beast"—the number 666. On television and the Internet, as well as in movies, books, and magazines, the mark of the beast has been the focus of endless speculation.

Some believe that 666 is the mark of the Biblical antichrist. Others say that it signifies some form of compulsory identification, such as a tattoo or an implanted microchip with a digital code that identifies the person as a servant of the beast. Still others hold that 666 is the mark of the Catholic papacy. Substituting Roman numerals for the letters in a form of the pope's official title, Vicarius Filii Dei (Vicar of the Son of God), and manipulating the figures a little, they come up with 666. It is also claimed that the same number can be calculated from the Latin name of Roman Emperor Diocletian and from the Hebrew version of the name Nero Caesar.*

These fanciful and contrived interpretations, however, are very different from what the Bible itself says about the mark of the beast, as we shall see in the following article. The Bible does reveal that those with the mark will experience God's wrath when he brings an end to the present system of things.(Revelation 14:9-11; 19:20) Understanding the meaning of 666, therefore, is much more than just solving an intriguing puzzle. Happily, Jehovah God, the very personification of love and the Source of spiritual light, has not kept his servants in the dark on this important matter.—2 Timothy 3:16; 1 John 1:5; 4:8.

“And it puts under compulsion all persons, the small and the great, and the rich and the poor, and the free and the slaves, that they should give these a mark in their right hand or upon their forehead, and that nobody might be able to buy or sell except a person having the mark, the name of the wild beast or the number of its name. Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six.”—Revelation 13:16-18.

The wild beast has a name, and this name is a number: 666. Six, as a number, is associated with Jehovah’s enemies. A Philistine man of the Rephaim was of “extraordinary size,” and his “fingers and toes were in sixes.” (1 Chronicles 20:6) King Nebuchadnezzar erected a golden image 6 cubits in breadth and 60 cubits high, to unify his political officials in one worship. When God’s servants refused to worship the image of gold, the king had them thrown into a fiery furnace. (Daniel 3:1-23) The number six falls short of seven, which stands for completeness from God’s standpoint. Therefore, a triple six represents gross imperfection.

A name identifies a person. So how does this number identify the beast? John says that it “is a man’s number,” not that of a spirit person, so the name helps to confirm that the wild beast is earthly, symbolizing human government. Just as six fails to measure up to seven, so 666—six to the third degree—is a fitting name for the world’s gigantic political system that fails so miserably to measure up to God’s standard of perfection. The world’s political wild beast rules supreme under the name-number 666, while big politics, big religion, and big business keep that wild beast functioning as an oppressor of mankind and a persecutor of God’s true people.

read this answer from this site:
The most obvious symbolism for 6 is in 666 in Revelation 13:18. Here is a symbol for the number of the beast. In the original the article "a" in not in front of "man". So, it the number of man, not a man. The number 666 represents that which is human, as opposed to what is of God (7). Since many of the numbers in Revelation refer to ideas rather than persons or literal quantities, the same principle should be followed here. 6 is less than the sacred 7, therefore imperfect and destined to fail. To the Jews the number 6 was a number of dread and doom. So, 666 was tripled dread and doom. If the beast is the Roman empire, then its opposition and persecution of Christians, was destined to fail. The whole theme of Revelation is the reward of those who overcome Satan, and the condemnation of those who give in to Satan.

The number 6 in Biblical numerology is symbolic of man. 666 is a numerological representative of the triune leadership of the world during the Tribulation period (Satan, the False Prophet, and the Antichrist). Satan has craved the worship of the Lord's people all these years and this triune counterfeit I mentioned is his best impersonation of God's threefold personage (God the Father, Jesus the Son, and the Holy Ghost) set aside to deceive/force the world to be subjected to his authority.

Numerology. It has to do with a man's name adding up to 666. He's supposed to be the Beast in revelation (some call him THE Anti-Christ, to associate with the Beast.) But it's actually a man. 6 being the # of man... less than perfect.
Don't you think it's weird that this is used in the Christian religion when most of them are so dead set against anything Occult?
