It doesn't just have to come from your parents. There can be some other family members that have it and may not have even been diagnosed. The grandparents could have been bi-polar or old crazy uncle Fred, and medicine just didn't understand back then, mental disorders as they do now. We still don't understand it all. If it is you that has recently been put on medication for this disorder, then please do not stop taking your meds. However, if the meds. are not working or if they seem to be making you worse, talk to your doctor!
Good Luck and Take Care

Absolutely. While many people think that there must be a genetic link to mental illness this does not appear to be the cause in the vast majority of cases. There are also quite clear familial predilections for certain types of mental illness. If you are concerned see your doctor, or start by looking at the website for the National Institute of Mental Health in Maryland. www.nimh.nih.gov

yes, Bipolar Disorder does not require a family history, it's a chemical imbalance of the brain.

Absalutely. It is just a disorder, and you may be born with it, or just develop it.
