I have 2 cats with my BF. When we first got together, he had a female cat who used to go absolutely nuts for no reason. She's a young playful kitty cat. Then, he moved to my city and we adopted a male cat. We have now had these cats together since April or May i believe.

The female cat has stopped being so crazy and is more calm. The male cat we adopted has stopped wanting to be held and is lazy as I ever saw. They will start to fight over, nothing, it seems like. They tolerate each other for the most part, but all of a sudden they will start to yell at each other and start batting at one another.

They don't hate each other do they? Are they jealous of each other?

Really "Stigma" did you need to comment? I wanted outsiders opinions, not my BF's. Geeeeez.

Multiple cats in a household have a heirarchal system, a ranking system, if you will. Right now, they're duking it out to see who's top cat...

If it gets too severe, you might have to keep them seperate. Otherwise, as long as lives aren't actually being threatened, let them settle the issue between themselves..

Here's the most important question; are they ever nice to each other? Do they sleep together and/or groom one another? If the answer is yes, then don't worry about the "fighting"....it's play-fighting, and they won't hurt each other.

Cats ARE very territorial, and will sometimes battle over certain spots (even after years of being friends)....but these fights won't cause injury, either.

They've been in the same household long enough that they should be used to each others' company by now. If you ever suspect that one is hurting the other (marked by one cat howling in pain usually), separate them with a squirt from a water bottle or squirt gun....or a loud, sudden noise.

If they are both adult cats they are fighting over who is the more dominant one. It will just take them awhile to get used to each other. There may be jealousy issues too. Cats are fickle creatures. They may never be friends but they should learn to tolerate each other pretty soon. They could just be playing too!

My cat gets stressed if she's crowded and will attack my little dog. Maybe they just need some room away from each other now and then but as someone mentioned before they're probably just figuring out who's top cat.

I bet that the girl cat waits outside and attacks the boy cat when he is coming out of the litter box. I think she is territorial over it. She was there first and feels like it's hers. And I think they're playing the rest of the time. Or they're training to become Thundercats :)

They fighting for revir obviously. I dont knew if I am remember right but one tip that I heard is to seperate them for a while and let them get used to each others smell (like hair and so on). After that it should be less of a mess so to say. Johan

Have they been neutered/spayed? If not, they might be attempting to mate. If so, it's probably just trying to establish dominance. Let them fight and they'll work it out.

They're just playing together. Let them play.
