Hypocrisy. The Muslims get very upset at any comment made toward Islam that does not fit their way of thinking, but they are totally insensitive to the beliefs of other groups. The Pope should be able to quote from church history without being raked over the coals. This is just another example of the lack of freedom in Muslim countries, and what we could expect if Muslims were ever to take over Western Civilization. They just do not understand freedom of speech---they cannot take the criticism because they know that what history has to say about them is true. I do not think that it was the smartest thing for the Pope to do, that is, saying before a public university forum what he did, but I will defend his right to say it. As a preacher I must insist that any advocate of Christianity should never be silenced by politics, be they local or international. Do not expect much sympathy for the Muslims. The West is in no mood for their shenanigans.

We're offended because he has the highest seat in all of Christendom and he's making these comments. I mean WHY QUOTE someone like that?? I don't see the point in it??
Its like if the head of Germany right now quoted Adolf Hitler... SHE WOULD BE ASKED TO RESIGN IF SHE DID THAT.
Or if the King of Saudi Arabia quoted Usama bin Laden... HE WOULD BE BOMBED TO RESIGNATION.
You see what I mean? It was dumb of him to do that. Its hard to believe such an old man with so much wisdom could do such a thing. The previous Pope John Paul was smart and wise -- he was on good terms with Muslims.
I mean, Christians are always bashing on Islam.. sure... some of our fiery preachers bash on Christianity. BUT NOT LIKE THIS. And definitely not the highest office holding person quoting controversial people.

I am not a Muslim-I am a Jew. And, I am offended! Shall we make a big issue of the Inquisition and the Crusades? The Crusades were the worst time in history, killing all those non-believers in Europe and the Mid-east.
The Catholic Church has the bloodiest history of any religion, and they should hide their heads in shame.
But, those who voted Benedict in knew what he was like-a true bigot. They should have known better. And, it is the Catholic on the street who will pay for it-----for a bigot's words.

Muslims are thinned skinned these days, if we say "Mohamed surely must have farted at some point during his life" Muslims would want to behead us for having said such a blasphemous thing.

You are asking why the leader of a religious organization cannot quote real people? Isn't that kind of like asking why PeeWee Herman quotes Mr. Television instead of real people during "PeeWee's Playhouse?"
