The first union to organize in the US was the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, established in 1863. I was a proud member of the organization until my retirement from railroading in 2001.

I went to the link above, and in yet another instance, wikipedia is incorrect. The BLE was established in 1863 and was the first organized labor union in the US.

Just around a year ago, the BLE merged with the Teamsters and now includes trainmen, the new organization known as BLET, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen.
