Is is spicy, greasy, and adds the great red color that looks great with the cheese.
It is not expensive and is easy to find, easy to store. By the time all the other veggies dicompose, pepperoni is starting to have fun. Pizza places love it for it, and offer it at low prices.

I would be inclined to say that Italy consumes more pizza than the USA. The most popular pizza in Italy is Margarita, which is simply tomatoes, mozzarella cheese (fresh mozza, not aged mozza like the US) and some fresh basil. Even if the USA consumes more pizza than Italy, when you factor in the number of people who prefer "plain cheese" pizzas then surely this is the most popular topping.
