How much RAM do you have and what size hard drive do you have? How much space is available? I work in IT and can probably answer this or help you with it. My email is jay01844@yahoo.com if you have other questions.

A Pentium II is a pretty slow chip by today's standards. Add that to the fact that Windows XP needs at least 1 gig of space on your hard drive for installation, and chances are your PC can't spare that much storage. Most of those older PC's had a 2 to 4 gig hard drive.

If you were thinking of buying the Windows XP software---don't.
Take that cash and put it towards a new PC. Even the cheapest desktop model at Wal-Mart is still a pretty good deal. If finances are tight, this is the best way to go.

Don't give a second thought to upgrading the computer you have now. It's too old.

It may be possible if you have enough RAM to handle the OS. What you need to do is get the Model Number of the computer and go to that Computer's Web Site. Check in Support and look for information for Upgrading to XP. I have an IBM Laptop, not upgraded as it do well with 98. But, as time pass and programs change and Internet stuff I may need to upgrade or buy another computer. At the Lenovo web-site (IBM sold out) it gives me information on what Drivers to download and also a BIOS update. Then there step by step installation to make XP work.

Probably if you have at least 128 K of RAM. I think this PC is a little old to upgrade but you could try and then if it doesn't work go back to windows 98 so long as your have the disc. One problem your will have is the software programs you have now using probably won't be compatible with Windowsxp. Another issue is you net connection, you will have to re-install your AOL and there may be other drivers needed too. See the link below to get started.
Note: Partitioning: I'd recommend you partition the drive with FAT32 since this will make it easier should you decide to go back to window 98.

Hi,

For minimum requirement are as following :

PC with 300 megahertz or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233 MHz minimum required (single or dual processor system);* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, or AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended

• 128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)

• 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available hard disk space*

• Super VGA (800 x 600) or higher-resolution video adapter and monitor

• CD-ROM or DVD drive

• Keyboard and Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

certainly it possible to upgrade to XP, if you have the installation CD already. Just insert the installation CD, and you will have the choice to upgrade from Windows 98 to XP. But, the best choice is if you back up all of your data and burn it to CD or other reliable media, format your hard disk, and do the fresh/new installation.

Hopefully it can help you to decide

XP will run on a Pentium II just fine.

I will state one caveat. You need to know how much RAM you have. If you have in the realm of 256M RAM, then things may slow down quite a bit.

XP typically uses much more than the 64M that Microsoft says is the minimum required amount.

XP will run on your PC but more RAM will make it run more efficiently and will provide the resources for you to be able to do more things simultaneously. i.e. Multi-tasking

I have XP installed on an old PC with an 800 MHz AMD Duron CPU, but the PC has 768M RAM installed. The PC runs just fine and multi-tasks quite efficiently.

If your computer is a Pentium II then realistically it almost certainly isn't powerful enough to run Windows XP.
