This is the Microsoft Recomend Method
Reboot your PC
Boot From CD ROM
Insert Windows Xp CD
In the Welcome Screen Press "R" to Repair
It will Reinstall windows XP without Lossing Your Data

But I recomend Backup your Important Data Before start this Process

I'm assuming you are doing a repair install, if so it should be ok. But like all things in life there is a risk so I would back up files to a CD-R.

As long as you don't format. You can install the OS overtop of itself and not have anything deleted. It's when you choose the format option that everything gets deleted.

u can lose some installations from the registry like office and all but u will not lose documents.
