They read the Resistance. pilferage causes a drop, so you won't be able to get away with it. Besides, you could fry yourself.

Usually the power is stolen by the local user. Visual inspection of the power meter is obvious. Statistically if your household electric bill has all of a sudden dropped to half the normal useage, even the dumbest power company might notice. I have heard of someone's neighbor calling the power company to have a shunt installed like my neighbor has. The neighbor has bragged and... Some crooks are so stupid ...
