SAP is a German application that stands for Systems, Applications, and Programs. SAP is a customizable application that is different for every company, but its primary objective is to help a company in ERP/MRP (Enterprise Resource Planning/Manufacturing Resource Planning).
When a company purchases SAP they choose the modules that are best applicable to their company. The modules usually have something to do with the industry that you are in and most modules will tie in to each other in one way, shape, or form. An example of this would be using the purchasing module to order parts. This in turn updates the Inventory module to give a real time idea of available material. Then when someone uses the maintenance module to request to have a lightbulb changed in thier office, a maintenance planner would be able to check the inventory to see if there are lightbulbs available.
Some of the more popular modules are Maintenance, Purchasing, Inventory, and Human Resources. There are also many many more modules for EHS, Receiving, Quality, etc. It's a very customizable system.
