I've never had brown sauce, so I can't identify any particular taste. It's always looked slightly odd to me, and there's no vegetable called "brown" - so what exactly is in this stuff? Thanks in advance for your answer. '_'

And by the way, everyone who has told me to "read the label" - read this... The whole point of Yahoo Answers is to ask questions that people will answer - not to get crappy advice from other people on how best to find an answer myself.

Malt vinegar, tomatoes, molasses, spirit vinegar, glucose,-fructose syrup, dates, sugar, salt, modified maize starch, rye flour, tamarind extract, spices, onion extract. HP Sauce that is.

pooh? not really, but not having a bottle infront of me I can't tell you them all, but it has vinegar, starch, tamarind, molasses, and spices of various sorts, amongst many other things. Sorry but that's all I can remember from reading the bottle a couple of years ago, but it is also a good sauce to have with cold meats! I'm talking H.P not just any common or garden brown sauce..

As an add to these answers. HP Sauce only recently had to put a use by date on the bottles. HP claimed there sauce improved with age and therefore diddnt need a use by date. Srange but true. P.S. I use hp for sexual purposes.[ smear it on the door knob so she cant get out ]

why dont you pick up a bottle on your next visit to tesco and have a look at the ingredients. simple
thank you for the email, was very nice of you. but if you read your own question it will show that you are asking what brown sauce is made of. if you read my answer it will show that i tell u to read the ingredints. the ingredients wiil tell you what brown sauce is made of. wich part of that are you having problems understanding. maybe you should take a grown up with you when you go.

I'll take a wild guess and say either onion or mushroom.

Any brown sauces I've ever made were either a mushroom or onion based sauce.

do you mean like hp and ok and daddies? It's the same as tomato sauce, it's made of tomatoes and what makes it more tangy and makes it brown is in the way the tomatoes are prepared. Brown sauce is fermented tomatoes.

My mum makes her own brown sauce. Its usually fruit based, with vinegar.

Mostly she uses plums. Sometimes she uses apples.

You just cook them a lot with vinegar. I used to hate it when she made it as it stank the house out.
