Just wondering whether it would be possible for a worm (which takes a long time to die anyway) to still be alive within a bird's digestive system. To this end, if it were still alive and the bird happened to die (say, by choking to death on said worm) could the worm re-emerge victorious from the gullet of the dead bird? I await your answers.

All hail the worm ... but sadly, as noted above, nothing will get past the crop (gizzard) where everything a bird eats is ground down into a thick sludge before it passes to the rest of the digestive track (birds lack teeth to rip/chew/grind food). Choking? Slim chance if on the way to the crop the worm, in a flash of comprehension of its impending doom, were to thrash out and lodge in the windpipe, suffocating the bird and then finds its way back out ... then it might live to fight another day. Its all so much easier on Arrakis, isnt it?

An eternity.

To the worm, it looks like eternity in Hell on stomacal acids, preceded by a short "light in the tunnel" effect, which is known to have given a false hope for many, many poor worms. That's why for most worms there is a Heaven (underground) and a Hell.

Oh, I almost forgot: in the worm's theology, purgatory would be when it's raining cats and dogs, because then there are birds too, and trying to reach dry lands with all these beasts roaming is hard for their little hearts. This period would last something between eternity and instantaneity.

After the worm (which might not even be in one piece) goes in the mouth of the bird it goes into its crop which is like a grinder filled with sharp bits of rocks. It rumbles around in there for a while and is then pretty much chopped into digestible fragments. By the time it hits the stomach it has no chance for re-emerging.

54 mins...and yes if the bird died the worm could emerge.
