Typically, hives in childhood are due to viral infections. Sometimes a child needs to be put on antihistamines to suppress the reaction and to make the hives go away. Hives that keep reoccuring are usually not due to inhalant allergies such as trees, grasses, or weeds.

The answer is yes. As a kid, I used to get hives all the time. I had seasonal allergies (hay fever) that caused the usual runny nose, scratchy eyes and throat etc.. But when I would get outside and start sweating and playing on the lawn, I would immediately break out with these huge hives. Sometimes just the simple act of sweating would cause hives. I assume the air was full of pollen or spores or something that I was allergic to and when the pores open up to allow the perspiration out, these antigens would get under the skin causing an allergic reaction. The good news, I eventually outgrow the hives part of my allergy.

to me the fact that it comes and goes must be more then something he is eating something around the house a plant or something. Is he in school ? why don't you do a diary and put down the times and dates and where he had been or what he has been doing at the time that you see the hive's. You did not tell us how old he is. But this is what I would do. All the best

Ask your docotr if its a good idea for him to be tested for allergies. He could be allergic to anything in the environment from pollen, grass, fungus, or dustmites. If he is allergic to dustmites (found in all matresses, pillows, and bedding) then you can buy the special covers and within a few days you will see the change in his skin. Also please note that people can develop allergies along the way, so something he may have eaten could still be the cause... My son suffers from Neurodermatitis and emotional factors can be a trigger. So when he gets nervous or very frustrated, his skin breaks out. Perfumes, abrasive detergents, soaps, etc... can all aggravate the situation.good luck
