its because your brain believes that, when someone else yawns, they are using up a lot of the oxygen in the surrounding air. therefore you also yawn, in an attempt to get some of the oxygen for yourself.

it doesnt really have a huge amount to do with being tired, although that triggers it at times.

hope this helps!

I read in a book that not only is contagious when you see it, when you hear someone talk about yawning you will feel like yawning too.
But yes, it is the need of the brain to get more oxygen but I don't know why is contagious.
Sorry.

I think it's contagious - I always yawn when I see someone else doing it. Even over the phone if I can hear a yawn, I'll so it.....

I couldn't really tell you, but what I can say is that yawning is not exactly a sign of being tired but when you yawn your brain is trying to get more oxygen.

This is a great question. I wish I could answer it but alas. We yawn even if we are not tired but bored. I guess that if we are bored our brain is tired of the situation that we are in at the time and is telling us to get the hell out of it. I am sure that I will not get best answer for this but angelinyourdream should get bonus points for such a great question.

It's because humans harbour a subconscious need to mimic each other; that's why if someone yawns next to you, you're very likely to yawn. This also works if someone near you begins scratching - you're more likely to start feeling itchy.

Its because when you see someone yawn, your brain thinks that they are taking in all the oxygen and so you go into automatic yawn otherwise you will suffocate!

its something to do with your subconsious self wanting to be like another. The reason for yawning is to let out the excess carbon dioxide and get in the neccesary amount of oxygen.
good luck

I agree awth Squirrell. Another trick I like to do when bored on the bus or in waiting rooms is to stare at a spot on the wall or ceiling, with a puzzled expression, occasionally turning my head to get a better look - you'd be surprised how many people get overcome with curiosity and have to look, too!!!
