Three days after being crucified and buried, Jesus was missing from his burial tomb. Some say Jesus' disciples stole his body and concocted a story that he rose from the dead. If that's true, why would the 12 apostles die for something they knew was a lie? Would you?
These 12 disciples went to their deaths proclaiming what they had no doubts about--that Jesus had risen from the dead, proving that he was everything he claimed to be...

It's a great argument that the Resurrection was real. You wouldn't find too many people willing to die to protect a lie. But for your information, only 11 of the apostles were tortured and killed. John died of old age at about 90.

There were also about 500 other people who saw the Risen Christ.

A detailed analysis of bilical scripture, and actual history would show that the four gospels of the New Testament (i.e. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) were written by men almost a century after Jesus's time, and they were not actual witnesses to Christ's Ministry.

This period of time, knowing the maximum life expectency of man at the time was not more than 90 years or so, the likelihood of a witness to the miracles, death, and ressurrection of Jesus is microscopic, if not impossible. This information handed down in song and story is not first hand witness testimony.

On the other hand, we see self sacrifice even today by Islamic fundimentalists blowing themselves up, in the name of Allah. They too willingly die for their beliefs, just like the apostles did over 1900 years ago.

People will lay their lives down for the promise of an eternal life after they die.

Now the question you should ask yourself, is after a deep moment of thought, and reflection. Would you willing go to your death right now proclaiming something that you have absolutely no empirical, tangible, or even credible proof of as absolute fact?

They apparently did, so therefore they are not lying since they believed it to be true. A Schitzophrenic who believes that every third person is an alien from Krypton proclaims it as the truth as well. Is he lying? No. He is just telling his story as he believes to be true.

If religion was provable using logic, and science. It would be taught as Religious fact, not religious faith. Faith does not mean lie, it means belief in something no matter how absurd it is.

Why did the Heaven's Gate cult die to jump on a comet? Why did David Koresh's followers willingly die in Waco? Why did the People's Temple do as Jim Jones dictated, and poison first their children, then themselves?

Basically, it comes down to this.....what a person believes is very powerful. It is so strong that sometimes you will do anything, including die, to prove your belief. That doesn't make it right, and I'm not saying that is what happened with the Disciples, but it's easy to understand that mentality if you look at it that way.

There are people out there, even today, who are SOOOO persuasive that they are capable of making people follow their every word....even to death. Dying for something doesn't prove anything except you believed in what you were dying for. Whether what you believe is the truth, or some idiotic scheme to control others, will never be verified.

It's the way of the world, friend, and will continue until people start thinking for themselves.

What Jesus taught should have been enough to establish a religion. Why would it have been necessary to rise from the dead? There is nothing in the Jewish texts that indicates a messiah would come back from the dead. On the other hand, pagan religions of that time had gods and demigods who were either immortal and couldn't be killed or who returned from death, so attaching this idea to early Christianity would have made it more attractive to converts.

Jesus's teachings should have been enough "to die for", from a Christian perspective. His wisdom and worth should not depend on his ability to walk out of his tomb.

And Stephen in Acts.... He was the first... check that guy out, totally on fire. He brings it alive more in his testimony because he shows the crowd the history and prophesy before Jesus. And then he tells them that they were just as disobedient to God as their fathers were. Then they stoned and killed him, too. The problem with this society is that they don't read and study enough to know what they are talking about. They say they have heard it all before but they haven't. And as far as hearsay, well, they can look it up for themselves. Reading a verse and judging a whole book, let alone a chapter of a book, on it is ridiculous. I would like to see more answers with actual fact attached.

Well, for the sake of argument, would you die for Jesus? And I know you have faith and believe wholeheartedly that He is the Lord and Saviour, but what if he isn't? You would have "died for a lie" even though you thought you were dying for your God.

But that said, Jesus, the historical figure, was put to death by a government who did not like his teachings. It is at least possible that he did not have much a of a choice in the matter.

Bright Blessings.

Good question, ask yourself, why would they go through all of that. Why would they go through the hardship, being put in prison, beaten, killed if it was a lie? It's not a lie. They knew Jesus was/is all that he claimed to be.
Jesus knew He was going to die. He CAME to die. It was the only way you could be atoned for your sins. He paid the sin debt! so that the law of sin and death didn't have to reign in our lives. There had to be blood shed. The blood of goats, and calves wasn't sufficient anymore. There had to be a perfect sacrifice and Christ was it!

First off people die for misguided causes all throughout history. Second ALL accounts of Jesus are Hearsay, there are no accounts from anyone who actually met a historical Jesus, NONE.

Why is it that something of the worldwide knows that the WMDs have been transported to Syria, however the strategies trusts in Washington DC do basically no longer get it? Why is it that right here in Israel that's undemanding expertise that the WMDs from Iraq went to Syria?

How do you know Jesus even existed? The account of his life is remarkably similar to accounts of similar figures in earlier religions. How would anyone know if the whole thing was pure fiction?
