In Michigan, you have to be STATE licensed. You can't get that from a teacher. You have to train for a certain amount of hours in the class, and a certain amount of hours on the floor working on live people. Then, once the teacher certifies that you have completed your training, and passed the classes, you have to go to Lansing and sit in front of the state board. They need to watch you doing certain things and they grade you on it. Based on how well you do, you get a state license.
I don't think it's legal for someone to train you outside of a school, but I don't know that for certain, either. It'd be better if you went to a school, though.

I would be REALLY careful. In most states, it is required that the person doing the teaching be certified and licensed by the state. If the person teaching is not a certified teacher then you cannot be certified. There are a required number of hours in the classroom and hours on the floor before you can be licensed. If you are caught cutting hair, doing colors, giving perms, etc., without a license there can be HUGE penalties. Even our nail techs must be certified as cosmetologists, although they don't cut hair, the nail techs fall under the cosmetology licensing laws.
Check with your state regarding the laws about costmetology; verify that she is licensed and CERTIFIED TO TEACH cosmetology. In my state there is an additional certification required to teach cosmetology over and above being a cosmetologist.
There are also state board exams that you must take in order to get your license. Without proper instruction you'd just be throwing money away. If you really want to do this, then I would go to a regular cosmetology school - it may cost more but the education is worth it.

I highly doubt it is possible. The only person-people who are allowed to train you are State certified cosmetology instructors. A licensed hair stylist is not allowed to instruct or train another person unless they hold an instructors license and it had to be in a school that is certified by the USSBC. I know because I used to work at a beauty school.

It will only work if she has an instructor license. If not, according to my state laws- it won't work. I'm not sure about your state laws, but the only way you can get a license for cosmetology is to do your schooling, take your state board test, and then the Licensing Dept. of your state will instate a license for you.

It all depends what state you are in and what they consider appceptable in order to get your license. I would call your State board and see what type of requirements you need to become licensed.
Here in Maryland you can either opt to go to Cosemetology school gets your hours in and pass with all your credits take the final test and get your license or you can apprentiship and accrue so many hands on hours, and so many theroy hours and as long as the person that is teaching you is a Senior Cos. then he/she can sign off on your hours worked and then in the end you still have to take the final test.

training comes in different ways...yes its possible to train someone without schooling but that will be limited to theories only....
but in the area of cosmetology, you should have an actual hands on experience for you to be really well in it....its a very delicate job and you can even get sued at one slight error so better watch out....

In most states, including Michigan, you can complete the required number of hours in a salon, and then simply take the state boards, and get your license that way.
But, to simply go to work in a salon, have the woman in the salon "give" you the license, and go right to work? No.

If you are selling and doing make-overs for Mary Kay or Jafra or Avon then you could be trained, do make-up, and not have a license or schooling.
Hope that helps!

depends on where you live.. her in Virginia you can do an apprenticeship while you are in cosmetology school but you have to pass the state board test to be certified. It just depends on your state's rules

I am pretty sure in ALL states you have to go for a state licensing test. It is a board of people to test you, not just one person. sounds like a scam to me.
