The United States went into Iraq to dethrone a barbaric dictator who was unjustly torturing and murdering his own people. If these crimes were wrong when Saddam was doing it, what makes it right when barbaric extremists do the same thing under the auspices of religion?
If cruelty of a leader is just cause to invade a country, why do we draw the line at the dictator, yet allow the citizens to slaughter and stone to death victims of an archaic regime?
The US has been unable to establish law and order in Iraq. At least while we occupy this country, should we bear any responsibility for the barbaric executions of homosexuals, women who were raped, etc.? Should we at least protest? Should we do nothing?
Before answering, remember that injustice and cruelty are always injustice and cruelty --regardless of how they're dressed up in religious robes.

I wish that we would protest, withhold something, do anything that would stop this; however, I do not see this government of Neo-cons do anything but promoting the same. Look at Bush right now: he wants the Senate to say it is ok to torture and to humiliate prisoners of war. Hardly a moral high ground!
Want to see what happens when a country becomes a Theocrasy? Look at what is happening in Iraq now. Look at any country where a religion runs the government. One has all sorts of "reasons" to treat folks like children of lesser gods. The killing and raping of people in the streets of Iraq are only mirroring what we have done in our prisons over there.
Seems hopeless unless we change the government here first.

Unfortunately that type of punishment is what is suitable for these perceived crimes in that particular religion. Christianity has a pretty gory history as well, i.e. Crucifixion, stoning, burning at the stake etc.
It will take alot more than the U.S. to change their minds about this. The introduction of an Iraqi governed democracy will begin the process. In a democracy, when the people speak they are supposed to be heard. Either way, NO-ONE can change thousands of years of religious belief in a mater of a few years.

I agree totally. Things were awful under Saddam, but they're getting awful in another way because of religious extremists taking over.
A bright spot is Kurdistan, which is a much better place for women than the rest of Iraq.

I agree. The US should do one of two things. We should a) admit that we are in Iraq because of oil and to maybe stop our enemies from setting up bases there and that we don't really give a damn about Iraqi freedom or stop doing business with people with Saudi Arabia who stone women to death for suspected abultery. But we can't have it both ways. Either we care about human rights or we don't.

Well,
We aren't the ones doing these things, (although there have been a few instances where service men may have).
How can you assume we are doing nothing? We are on the streets, training the Police and Military, rebuilding infrastructure.
If people are hell bent on killing each other there is only so much anyone can do.
Saddam on the other had WAS KILLING people, and ordering whole villages killed, he was authorizing the killings, we are trying to prevent them.
Peace!

No,they were killing each other before we got there, they are killing each other today, and they will still be killing each other after we have left. Remember, it is the religion of peace.
