Very good question. I believe people who put down something they know nothing about are very immature. Just like a child who will not try a certain food because it is yucky, they are probably swayed by the looks. Maybe some one that they knew who claimed to be Christian did something that angered them, or they see news media that portray Islamic individuals as terrorists, and Jews as extremists. They assume things because of a few people and then condemn the religion without really knowing anything about it. I believe education (it can be self education by reading) is the key to learning tolerance. If you study religions, you are in a better place to choose what is right for you, and realize that all people have that right, and nobody should be put down for what they believe in.

You want to know how they can do it? That's easy.
People tend to denigrate what they don't understand. It's no different than a child who refuses to eat something, saying it tastes funny, without tasting it even once.
For Christians, every other religion is false....therefore evil and stupid. Unfortunately, that applies to every known religion out there, including atheism. Everyone wants to feel that their beliefs are the right ones, and anyone following something different is wrong.
The diversity of religions on this planet have come about due to human interpretations.....nothing more. It's always been, and always will be, how people see the world around them that will determine their attitudes toward something different.
Personally, I've read as much as possible about all religions....simply to answer a few questions for myself concerning what others believe. There is strength in knowledge, friend.....always remember that.

Who calls them Evil? I have studied (and continue to study) comparative religion and I am of the firm belief that religion is myth.
Myth is not intrinsically evil, and people ruled by intellect know the difference between myth and fact. I do agree, however, that most world myths have a basis in fact. There once existed a very strong man named Hercules, but he was a smelly drunk who loved bloody violence. The myths of King Arthur and Paul Bunyon had their origins in reality, too Scientific evidence that Noah's flood actually occurred, but the Noah story is based on a much older myth.
Be aware that, in unsettled and frightening times, people turn toward an imaginary greater power because they feel powerless on their own. If the world situation eases up, so will the number and intensity of religious believers.

♥Amber♥,
Islam, that's the no brainer. Current events are easily gathered. Christianity and Judaism might take some study.
As far as Islam goes; Those that are up at arms with the world are actually very common. And here on this very site, if you meantion that you recognize Israel's right to exist as a nation, those calling themselves "peaceful- HERE on THIS SITE, lose their composure and begin to attack ME for being a ZIONIST.
I wasn't even sure what a zionist was until I asked. I was trying to find out why the Muslim's used that word so vehemently. Even after the definition was given to me, I didn't know what the big deal was.
Apparently they are brought up from childhood to think that Israel was evil. Well, I guess "judge not unless ye be judged" is a verse that can actually be applied here. They judged, and so they are being judged. It's THEIR emotive response due to propaganda absorbed as children, to judge the existance of Israel evil. So in turn, they are judged as evil.
Isave my e-mails from other people here. I could post them for you. One was considering himself to be peaceful and a "bridge builder" between faiths. When I let on that I recognized Israel had a right to exist, he totally lost it.
I don't know, you figure it out. If their religion isn't evil, then I guess nothing I can say can prove it to you.

Have you studied ... I mean really studied ... the texts on the Easter Bunny?
We all bring in a certain amount of foreknowledge based on our upbringing, and you are right that it may make us leap to unwarrented conclusions.
However, generally, the people who really study the history and the meaning of the text in the era in which it is written will inevitably tell you that you cannot be 100% literal with it.
Do not look for any organized relgion's doctrine to be entirely
self-consistant.
That's not what religion is for.
Religion offers spiritual guidance, gives you a sense of community
and a common sense of purpose.
None of the big religions are entirely free of inconsistancies.

I've studied religions and cults since 1968 and have studied most writing of the major religions. I think I am qualified to say that Islam is stupid.

Religion is a matter of faith. It is a way to explain the unknown. In reality, man created God in his own image because he wanted to live forever. He then tries to kill those that don't believe or worship exactly the same way he does. We are only immortal through our grandchildren. Of the living things that have lived on this earth, 99% are now extinct. We will evolve, hopefully, into computers and could live there almost forever. I have studied and thought for many years. God Bless !

They can't, if they haven't studied it.
But have you ever considered that they have studied it, in depth, and say it's stupid because, well, it is?
I have studied them all, Judiasm and Christianity in some depth, and have at least had the courtesy to read the whole quran in the english translation a muslim friend gave me that he got from his mosque. I see no reason to believe any of them.

Actually most atheists have a christian, muslim or jewish background. So they always have good knowledge about at least one of these religions. Its after understanding the big bang and evolution that they become atheists.
