Depends on what you want to do with your ECE degree. If you just want to write software, you might not need to know them. Of course if that's the case, why aren't you getting a CS degree.

Everything else in ECE is governed by calculus ... so derivatives are used all the time.
An expression of a time-varying current is the derivative of the charge. A phase-lock loop used in FM application is essentially a derivative of the phase.
