Hi, there are many good answers and references here. I will try to summarize and give you one list but it is based on my personal preference and use (and they're all free):
1-AVG anti-virus (esp. if you use MS Outlook. If not Avast! is a good alternative.)
2-Microsoft Defender
3-Ad-Aware (and be sure to use the "immunize" option)
4-Spybot
5-Make sure the Windows firewall is enabled. (I used to use Zone Alarm and stopped because I felt with all of the above, and a hardware firewall in my router, I am protected sufficiently.)
For the bobax worm, visit the URL below to read about it AND scan your computer for malware. This may require the installation of an ActiveX agent, which should be ok.

Good luck!

All the previous answers are correct (I use AVG Free, Spybot S7D, and Spyware blaster) however a tip, make sure you install the old anti-virus from add/remove programs in your control panel after you have downloaded the software, turn off system restore which can be got at via system tools in the control panel and/or your start menu. Restart your machine, install your anti-virus software without connecting to the net until it ask to download updates.
The reason for this is many bugs can be hidden in the system restore files which anti-virus programmes can only read but not treat if it is functioning.

I use a free anti virus program called AVG from www.grisoft.com This has worked very well for many years now. But as with all anti virus you need to keep the data updated. Good luck

The best free anti virus/anti spy ware protector that I found is Zone Alarm. But I would spend the money and buy McAfee Security Suite. It has a larger data base and more up to date. Good Luck!

bobax is a worm
Creates the mutex "04:12:20:", where is a series of random numbers based on the volume serial number of the infected computer. This mutex ensures that only a single copy of the worm is present in memory.
Copies itself as %System%\.exe, where is a random number of random characters.
Removal
If you are running Windows 2000 or XP, and have not yet done so, you must patch for the vulnerability described in Microsoft Security Bulletin MS04-011. If you do not, it is likely that your computer will continue to be reinfected.
For a free virus software get avg version 7 from www.grisoft.com and install it, run it and dont forgeet to keep it updated.
For spyware try pc bugdoctor, or spysweeper

You can get Norton free online for a month, but my brother just kept removing, then downloading it again before the month was up. Theres also another one. Is it AVG or something Zone? Not sure. Do a search for them. But I recommend you get free Adaware as well. Thats good for spyware, malware and adware.

these r all free programs also go online to spyware info.com and run a free scan u might have to hit the "control" (CTRL) button to access the program once it comes up then it runs a full scan on your computer and removes unwanted items then has u restart your computer! Then run one more scan just to be sure everything is gone.
Good luck!

For virus protection that is free i would suggest AVG. I have used it as well as many people i know. The only reason i don't anymore is cause i got a better free package with my Internet provider.
