What's your price range? Definitely 4 wheel drive will help, subaru's, audi's and many other cars have 4 wheel drive models. I like my BMW because it has heated seats and a heated steering wheel which is nice in the cold mornings.

The Mercedes ML500 ( i get mine next week ) and at £46,000 its good value next to the BMW X5 , also the Volvo XC90 is a very nice motor... ( im on my 4th Volvo now , a V70T5 ) and love it.
