Buying McAfee is not an issue.
So, if 'cost' factor is taken out, which one should be preferred?

AVG is MUCH better in my opinion.

You also need more than just antivirus. I use the following and consider them the best! (at this time.) AND they are also free.

I use all of the following Free software with Windows XP SP2 and Internet Explorer with MSN toolbar and the pop-up blocker turned on and have never had a single problem with my computer sense Microsoft came out with SP2. (knock on wood.) (And be sure to keep Windows and the following software Updated)

The best Anti-virus is: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition. (www.grisoft.com)http://www.grisoft.com/doc/289/lng/us/tpl/tpl01

The Best Spyware defense is: SpyBot Search and Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html)<--English version

AND: AdAware SE (www.lavasoft.com)
AND Spyware Blaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.info/kb/)
The best Firewall besides the one that comes with Windows is: Zone Alarm (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/co... or just (www.zonelabs.com) and select the FREE version.

These are all FREE and are all that are required. There is no reason to pay for this kind of software, except to give a donation to the writers if you can.
ALL the above programs are recommended and should be run on a regular basis. With some the free versions they must be run manually.

The best way to avoid getting any Malware (virus, Trojan's, spyware, etc) is to practice safe computing. Microsoft and many others have countless articles on the subject of safe computing. (something I think should be taught in schools)

If you're going to pay for an anti-virus program, I recommend bit defender over Mcafee any day.

I think that Mcafee 07 is one of the worst programs I have ever seen. After fighting that program for about a week, I switched all of my personal computers, and over 50 company computers to bit defender. I wish i had been using it a long time ago, because mcafee is absolutely terrible.

The main issues I have with mcafee, huge memory usage, very slow scanning (>2 hours for a large HD), error messages that force you to shut down (No ignore option), doesn't find all viruses and cant delete most PUPs or viruses. Stay away from mcafee.

Neither one. Go to www.avast.com and sign up. No cost. It is free for personal use. It is the best on the market, bar none.

It does the updates automatically, and a voice saying "Virus data base has been updated." It catches virus before the file is even opened and gives you instructions on what to do. I love it.

You can do what you want, but this one makes AVG and McAfee look like chump change.

AVG is better. McAfee and Norton are the worst.
Also, someone here named Cuite is going to find this question and then post a LONG pre-written advertisement for ZoneAlarm. Ignore her.
In fact, that user is a freaking walking advertisement for the company, which almost makes me wonder if she's some kind of bot.
You've been warned...
