It varies by airline and paid ticket class. It used to be 2 bags up to 70 lbs each for coach and 3 bags for first class. Many airlines have cut the free allowance to 50 lbs for coach passengers but this is not universal. Some allow extra free baggage for their very frequent flyers regardless of ticket class.

Check with your airline for exact information.

Check each airlines website, they are all different.
And if I may add- shrinking. Airlines used to allow a lot more.

I think its 50 lbs per checked bag.
