Sin is only defined by the pious in order to frighten themselves into being good people. The rest of us don't need threats of eternal suffering to be decent human beings.

Following the words of the bible, sin could only exist because God created it. God created everything unless in the beginning there was darkness AND sin.
Anyway what is a sin?
In the Hindu religion its a sin to even touch a cow.
In the Jewish religion its a sin to eat pork.
In the Jewish religion its a sin to work on the sabbath.
Are these things that a God would see you doing and say, 'that guy/girl needs to spend the rest of eternity burning for that bull shyte'.
Guy in hell #1: What are you in for?
Guy in hell #2: I loved bacon egg and cheese mcgriddles... and you?
Guy in hell #1 I had a tuesday through saturday schedule at Radio Shack.
Riiiiight.
I think if God really loved us and wanted us to be happy, there would have never been a tree of knowledge of good and evil. Why allow someone to make choices if all that choice does is lead to destruction?
Imagine someone saying "I'll let you decide whether to jump off a bridge or not... and whatever you decide I'll just live with."
Is THAT love?
Sure it is... it's GOD's love.
*sigh*

God created us to have a relationship with Him. Sin is simply anything that takes us away from that relationship with Him.
By that definition we sin against each other also any time we speak an offending word or do something that separates you from a loved one physically or emotionally.
And just like I'm sure you would ask a loved one forgiveness, that's all that God wants.
The only difference is God has the real power to grant forgiveness that actually washes away that sin and grants eternal life.
The Word says: The wages of Sin is death, But the gift of God is Eternal Life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
God loved you so much that He gave His only son to attone for the sins that you and I could not attone for.
We cannot reach perfection on our own. God knows this because He created us with Freewill.
He had to create us with Freewill in order for Him to have true relationship with us. Therefore He had to take the risk that we would reject Him as well.
There's an old quote that explaines it best: "If you love someone let them go, if they return to you, they are yours, if not, they never were...."

We have free will to do whatever. The law is given so we know what sin is. But God offers a way to escape punishment of the law. God hates sin. But God loves so much that He sent Jesus, and through Jesus we escape the punishment.

My dad is pretty much non-religious, but brought all us 4 kids up by this premise:
There are 10 rules laid out in a book called the Bible. Live your life by them & whatever you chose as a path in life, in any given religion (or non belief), you'll be an 'upright' person & peole will respect you for it, and, at the end of it all when called to face any other higher being, or not as the case may be, you'll be on the side of the angels!
Just a thought: leave it with you!

This is a question that has been posed and discussed by theologians for centuries. I typically understand the "reason" for sin as being a product of free will. God, in his infinite love, shared life with human beings and endowed them with the gift of free choice. As a result, man can freely choose those things that are of God (love) or those things that oppose God (evil). It is our duty as people of this world to 'freely choose' love over evil, and as a result, bring about the kingdom of God on earth.
Thus, sin is simply a product of our free choice.

Sin exists in the form of hatred and ignorance towards the things and rules God had given us. We (mankind) hate God because we have not asked him for peace and love for our hearts.

Let me give you an analogy.
As a responsible parent, I give my kids rules and as they get older, I give them choices. They know the rules and the ramifications. They can choose to accept these rules or face the consequences. As a loving parent, it would be irresponsible for me not to allow them to learn responsibility wouldn't it?
Would I be a loving parent if I tell a 40 year old child that they still have to follow my rules? Or would I be more loving if I allow them to learn how to live and exist and take responsibility for their actions.
