Any veteran honorable discharged is entitled to a military burial in a national cemetery, head stone, flag to cover the casket, and to be buried with military honors. This includes later convicted muderers and criminals. Many are trying to change this but this is something they earned when they served their country.

There are other National Veteran Cemeteries. My Father in Law was buried free of charge in our capital city of our state in Veteran Cemetery. They buried his wife 9 feet deep & him 6 feet deep on top of her. Running out of land but allowed both burials at no cost. It is a small headstone, but they do not seem to mind & I am the only one who goes back to check on them. Family does not believe in mourning at gravesite, lawn care done by federal gov., & flags put out on holidays by Veterns groups.
I am grateful for US goverment's offer of free gravesites for veterans.

If you are indigent, and you served in the military with an honorable discharge, the government will pay to bury you.

No it is a free benefit right now. When they run out of land for those newer cemeteries they might change the rules.
