A very close friend of mine was diagnosed as being Bipolar Manic Depressive when he was 25 (7 years ago).
I found that he went through his manic stages for sustained periods because he enjoyed the sensation of being manic. He told me that it was better than any other high that he has had in his life and that is quite a few unfortunately.
Eventually though he would hit a wall and then the depression would set it in.
He would become listless, jaded and ambivilant to things surrounding him with a "Devil may care" type attitude.
The major problem that we (his circle of friends had) was ensuring that he maintained a regular schedule with his medications. He was taking Lithium and at the beginning an anti-pyschotic drug as well that was removed once the initial symptons were brought under control.
A few signs of Manic stages that he displayed were as follows:
Non stop talking (didn't make sense at times)
On edge and felt threatened in public places
Hyper-activity
Distrust and never got tired.
Depression symptons were :
Extreme lethargic states
Unwillingness to be in society
Suicidal talk (never made an attempt)
Extreme lows and crying for no apparent reason.
He was forced into a care program prior to his diagnosis and we all attended a meeting at his families home to discuss what it was that we could do to help him.
If you feel that you are suffering from manic depression PLEASE seek a medical opinion and follow the care instructions.
My friend is now for the most part a healthy and active member of society and holds down a full time job in Linguistics. We still need to monitor meds once in a while but other than that it has been 2 years since a major incident.
Good Luck and all the best to you!

Bi-polar is Manic depression just a more severe form. Major mood swings, weight loss, lack of motivation, not wanting or enjoying anything. We all get this way sometimes but if you feel that you are suffering for longer than 6 wks and you haven't had any true reasons for your behavior. SEE your doctor about it. There are great new methods for these disorders but I would like to mention. Eating habits are a huge issue. If you aren't eating properly seretonin will not be released into your body and can cause chemical imbalances. Try vitamins and melatonin if you can't sleep or feel really bad? They say chocolate releases seratonin and exercise is very good also, releases feel good seretonin like chocolate w/o calories. Good luck and I hope you feel better soon. I've lost a few friends that nobody believed. The first step is the cry for help. TRUE manics and bipolars, just kill themselves and never ask for help. SO you are still at least capable of grasping onto your life. If it makes you feel any better? My life is pretty sad right now too. I lost another loved one two months ago and I have not been good at all. I've been sad for 2 yrs and everytime i think I'm better, someone else dies, i've just been in mourning though so i'm not on anti-depressants.
Good luck. Sunshine does help a whole lot too. Friends , family even visiting a fun place, surround yourself with people even if you don't know them. Get out in the world. IT HELPS!

There are two sides to the illness. The mania and the depression. They are lows and highs taken to an extreme. The lows (depression) can last very long periods of time. The highs (mania) can lost long periods too. During the mania part, the person feels as if she or he is invincible, has an extreme amount of self confidence and self worth. Is very outgoing and happy. During the mania time, some inappropriate things can be done, such as shoplifting or spending money you don't have, buying things you don't care about, etc.
If any of these sound familiar, look up the condition online and see if there are other symptoms you recognize.
Good luck to you.

i know some manic depressive people personally, i myself am bi polar it runs in my family. manic depressive is very like it in some ways its not just mood swings...manic phases make you feel like you can take over the world, outgoing, shopping, running around, excited for no reason, ready for anything, its also very dangerous because you think nothing can hurt you or get in your way..the depressive cycles are just as bad but opposite. wishing for death darkness hating people and yourself...everyone is diffrent but these are things ive seen myself. if you think you have a problem please talk to someone about it soon. might only be a short term thing but if not medication may be nessecary to help you. i hope it all works out.

Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine has excellent articles on bipolar disorders and mental health with lots of info and suggestions on what can be done on it. They do stress that in moderate to severe cases it is best to seek help from a doctor or psychiatrist experienced in diagnosing and treating this often severe and dangerous disorder.
Good luck and God Bless!
