A woman ovulates at arund 12 - 14 days after her period starts. Sperm survive in the vagina for approximately 3 days and the egg survives approx 24 hours. this means that sex is risky before ovulation as you can not be precise about when you ovulate. After ovulation is less risky as the egg survives a for a very short period. The safest point is during the week before a period is due. This can be confirmed by checking cervical mucus. Egg white consistency is fertile mucus which helps the sperm to travel to the fertile egg. White cloudy mucus indicates less risk, although there is no totally safe time.

I have always heard that 10-14 days afte a woman's cycle is the WORST time if you're not trying to pregnant. That's usually when a woman ovulates. Technically - and not to sound gross - the safest time to have sex is during your period. I know, I know, not the most appealing time to do it, you just asked for the safest. The few days right after your period ends are also pretty safe, because you're definitely not ovulating at that point, or the week before your period. I know it sounds strange, but you might want to invest in an ovulation test so you can see exactly when during your cycle you ovulate, and then you know when NOT to have sex during your cycle.
I love the way people actually read the question, especially the part that say, "No Lectures" and still make stupid remarks. They must have done so well in school where you have to read the entire question on a test before answering.
I hope this helped. Good Luck.

As others have said, there's no reliably safe time, and 10-14 days after a woman starts her period (Day 1 is the first day of her period) is generally considered to be when she's ovulating ie. the most likely time to cause pregnancy.
This is all based on a 28 day cycle, actually ovulation typically takes place 14 days before a woman begins her period. With a 28 day cycle this is also 14 days after her last period. So the 'best' way to do it with just a calendar is to find out how long the woman's cycle is and try to calculate likely ovulation dates from that...remember sperm can survive inside a woman's body for about 5 days so don't have unprotected sex for 5 days or so before predicted ovulation.

If you're dead set on natural family planning look into basal body temperature charting - try reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility : The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control and Pregnancy Achievement by Toni Weschler - I always hear good things about that.

Unless you are charting your cycles and recording your fertility signs (basal body temperature and condition of cervical mucous) there is no reliable way to know when you are infertile. On average women ovulate 12-16 days before their period comes, but stress, illness and other factors can delay ovulation and you wouldn't know it until your period was late. If you actually KNOW that you've ovulated, you are safe a couple of days later because the egg has a very short life span (most of your fertile time of the month is in the days leading up to ovulation because the sperm have a much longer life span than the egg.) Normally you'd be safe on the first day or two of your period, but you could become fertile again before you stop bleeding because your body is already preparing for the next ovulation. If you cannot afford to have an unplanned pregnancy, use a reliable form of birth control every time you have sex.

Some of the answers given have said it already, but the safest time is actually after the second day of the period starting, after the heaviest blood flow - that is the old unfertilised egg being cleared out - and even thougfh the sperm will still be alive and wiggling for a couple of days after intercourse there is much less chance of finding its way to an egg - beacuse the remaining blood flow will help flush it out and the new egg will not have started to mature as yet. Yes, it can be messy, but if you and your partner love each other and enjoy making love then you should actually find this quite a turn on - if you don't want the hassle of towels on the bed, try making love in the shower - which is pretty erotic at the best of times.

If you're talking about avoiding pregnancy, the safest time to have sex is actually DURING her period. It's a bit sloppy, but she's least likely to be fertile just then. So put a towel on the sheet under her hips and go for it!
I'm only being half a wise guy there - what I said is actually true - but you also need to know that the first day or so immediately after her period ends, she'll be somewhat tender down there. That's okay, usually by the end of the second day through the fifth day after her flow stops it's fairly safe. But if you wait 14 days, you will very likely earn a new title in short order - that of "Daddy"!

*Are we having fun yet* has given you the correct answer - i will explain further....
to count the days of a womans cycle you start number 1 at the first day of her period - the average cycle is 28 days long before we start at 1 again. A woman with the average 28 day cycle ovulates at day 14 & as such she is most fertile between days 11-16. The reason we say she is fertile for a few days is that sperm can live inside her body for 3 days & so 'wait' for ovulation but the egg is only viable for 1-2 days. A woman actually ovulates 14 days BEFORE her next periods starts, so if her cycle is longer she will ovulate later.
This information is helpful to people trying to get pregnant, but less helpful for people trying to prevent a pregnancy as - as has already been said - ovulation can occour out of sync, particially in teens, women about to start the menopause or those with an unhealthy or stressful lifestyle.
The safest time to have sex is during her period, the second safest being the week before her period, because conditions in the womb during this time, even if the women did ovulate out of sync, arent favorable for implantation to occour.
I hope this helps

As others have said this is the time that a women ovulates meaning the time which pregnancy will occur. However it does depend on a woman's cycle, some are as short as 18 days meaning this time could be most fertile only 8 days after first day of period. Or longer cycles say 36 days the'unsafe' against pregnancy could be day 18 after 1st day of period. generally ovulation is usually mid cycle length of period so to play safe on pregnancy front about 4 days either side of ovulation.

Every woman is different as most people say... and yes you only ovulate for 1-3days a month... but just to let you know that sperm can survive for up to 2 days after intercourse... sooo if a women were to begin her ovulation cycle within the time frame... even if you don't have sex during that period it is still possible that she could conceive with the sperm that was already present from 2 days prior... so I would have to say that there is no real safe time... sorry...

avoid the 10 -14 days after she has started her 1st day of her period , i always give myself a 5 day break incase as sperm can survive inside and I have never been caught and i used this method when planning baby 2 to fall pregnant and it worked so count from the 1st day of your period 10 days onwards mark on a calendar dodgy 5 days and be sensible these days and then after that u should be ok until your next period comes and do the same each month , this works for me as my cycle is same every month dont know if it works if your cycle is unpredictable ! - good luck but be safe and go on the pill or use condoms if u dotn want a baby
