I had one, now it has failed and on antibiotics. They want to retreat. But if this doesn't work, I want it pulled and my dentist doesn't want to do this. What I am supposed to do?

Yes, I had one. You don't say what age you are, but the younger you are, the more effort they will make to retain your natural teeth. If they remove a molar when you are young, the other teeth shift or migrate, and this affects your occlusion or bite, and can affect the temperomandibular joint ultimately. Options are few once that tooth is out: Bridge, partial plate, or implant, none of which are as elegent, comfortable or cheap as having your own tooth retained.

If you are going to the same dentist that did not adequately perform the first root canal, you may want to consider going to a second dentist, for at least a second opinion, if not treatment. Sometimes root canals fail, it does not necessarily mean that the dentist is not skilled, though.

Best wishes, I know you are tired of that toothache.

It does happen. I had 2 that failed and got them retreated. I would NOT suggest getting your tooth pulled unless you are 95 years old. Once you do that you have to get either a "Maryland Bridge" to fit in there or a dental implant which costs a couple grand. If you leave the hole empty, it will start a domino effect and the surrounding teeth will start to fail. If need be get another dentist's opinion.

I don't know why you want to have it pulled if your dentist says he can fix it. You will just end up with a missing tooth that will cost you more for a false tooth . you might as well let him fix it. i had a root canal and the Dentist broke a file off in my canal, and doesn't want to fix it . but, if you have another one , call a endodonisit {root canal specialist} just to be on the safe side. Good Luck !

now a days its better to go for an implant than a root canal, root canals have a limited life whereas implants have a life of over thirty years, ends up being alot more cost effectice long term

He didnt do his job by removing all of the nerve. You should be complaining and insist he act immediatly at no charge to do it right.
