Scotties can be VERY aggressive with strangers and with anyone who annoys them. They are tough dogs that are rarely afraid of ANYTHING! You did the right thing by having him neutered. Now, you need to begin training him to respect you and to tolerate the people you pass on the street and invite into your house. Keep him on a leash at ALL times. Make him sit and stay when other people are around. DON'T let anyone try to pet him - Scotties can strike like a cobra without any warning and they have very big teeth.

Obedience training for terriers should be fun and motivational. You will get nowhere trying to order them around like a Golden Retriever. These are the books that I recommend to my students; you can get them on Amazon.com

Has this dog always had temperament problems or is this something new? If it's a pretty drastic behaviour change, you need to get him checked out by the vet because it can often be for a physical reason.

If not, then he just needs some serious training. You need to become his pack leader, he's being aggressive because he feels he has to be the one in charge. You don't give any details as to what he does. How does he attack? Does he growl? Does he actually lunge at people or dogs? I believe you need some help getting this dog under control and obedience is not the answer for a dog with serious behaviour problems. You need to find a dog behaviourist to help if you can't get him to obey you, someone to teach you how to teach him. Good luck finding help.

He's probably attacking people because he's afraid and has found that if he acts in an aggressive manner people will leave him alone. Castration may have not been a good idea, as it can sometimes leave a dog feeling more threatened and vulnerable. You need to take your dog along to a specialised training centre, where he can receive some one-to-one training in a secure location, and with people experienced in handling difficult dogs. As he gets more used to being with other people, and realises that they are not a threat, he should improve.

I don't know where you are based, but if it's anywhere near Leicestershire or Cambridgeshire, these people are very good:

Good luck.

Sounds like from your dogs point of view your his '*****' (no offence). Firstly when he attacks a visitor do not even tell him off (he's getting the attention he wants) just move him to another room. Also try asking a couple of your braver visitors to have to hand some dog treats the next time they visit and then after compleatley ignoring the dog on entry, (he should settle after a while) when he settles he will get lots of praise and treat from the 'friendly' visitor.

get him checked out at the vets this could also be that he is protecting you as he is more dominant esp if its everyone but you. i would get in touch with a good behaviourist your vet should be able to help before this gets any worse. a behaviourist will prob ask if the dog has been given a clean bill of health from the vet before they will do anything in case it is a medical problem
