Put the eggs in a pot with cold water. Bring the water to a rolling boil and boil for 3 minutes. Turn the stove off and leave the eggs in the water for 20 minutes. Perfect hard-boiled eggs everytime!

You have to put the egg in the water before boiling-or it will break open. Put eggs in pan, add enough water to cover eggs, bring to a rapid boil and then reduce so it is simmering. For soft-cooked eggs, cook for 4-6 minutes and 15-20 minutes for hard cooked eggs. Run under cool water when done to peel.

Just in case your mother never explained this to you, here are the simple steps involved in boiling an egg.
Steps:
1. Place the egg in a saucepan.
2. Run cold water into the saucepan until the water is 1 inch above the egg. (Image 1)
3. Place the saucepan on a stove and cook over medium heat until the water begins to boil.
4. Reduce the heat to low.
5. Simmer for 2 to 3 minutes for soft-boiled eggs or 10 to 15 minutes for hard-boiled eggs. (Image 2)
6. Remove the egg with a spoon or ladle and let it cool slowly, or run cold water over it to cool it more quickly. (Image 3)
Tips:
Use hard-boiled eggs to make deviled eggs or egg salad sandwiches.

Put enough water in a pot just to cover the eggs and wait until it reaches boiling point - once it does I think its 3 minutes for soft boil and 5-7 minutes for hard boil

I was always taught that you put the eggs in a pot and just cover them with water. Turn on the burner and when you get a full rolling boil, shut off the flame, cover the pan with a tight lid, and let them sit for 20 minutes. I guess you can also let them sit for 10 minutes and they will be what is called a soft-hard boil..the yolks are not runny but not elastic, either.

START BY USING WARM TAP WATER IN A SMALL POT WITH JUST ENOUGH WATER TO COVER THE EGG(S).
BRING POT WITH EGGS TO A FAST BOIL.
FOR SOFT BOILED EGGS REMOVE FROM POT TWO MINUTES AFTER BOIL AND PLACE EGG IN COOL WATER BEFORE PEELING.
HARD BOILS NEED FIVE MINUTES OF BOIL TIME AND THEN THE COLD DIP BEFORE PEELING.
