If you can spend 12 lakhs, why settle for a 7lakh car? Well 7 lakh will get you a Honda City but there is no Toyota for that price.
The cars you can buy for 7-12 lakhs include the Honda City(ZX & VTEC), Chevrolet SRV, Optra, Skoda Octavia, Lancer Cedia etc
Both the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla retail for 11lakhs and you should go for one of these. The Corolla is a car that has a good engine with strong performance and good fuel-economy. It is refined, has comfortable interiors, supportive seats and is tall. You sit very high with good forward visibility as in an MPV which elder people will appreciate. The letdown is the stiff ride quality, you feel every undulation on the road.
The Civic on the other hand has a ride that is very absorbant. It also handles well, goes fast and does everything the corolla can and much more. Firstly, its styling is very contemporary. The Corolla looks old beside a Civic. Infact, the current Corolla is a generation behind when compared to the Civic. Its interiors are futuristic and looks out of a space ship.It is said that when Toyota was approving the design of the next generation Corolla, the Civic was launched and Toyota, shocked by the Civic'c futuristic looks, sent the design back, to be re-drawn. Expect an exciting look for the new Corolla that will make debut in a year.

Having said that, the Corolla is no longer a worthy buy. You will soon see a newer version replacing yours in two years if you buy one. If I were you, I would go for the Civic(well, i will also consider other brands)). The automatic version is also worth buying, if you are a city resident and drive yourself.

Both the cars undoubtedly have extremely good reputation . The Toyota of course stands ahead in after sales service and brand image. However for a price sensitive Indian customer the latest Honda city ( somewhere between 8 - 8.5 lacs ) would certainly be a much better deal considering that Honda cars offers a good resale value too . A Honda civic is also rated as a generation ahead than Toyota corolla in the road test conducted by Autocar India .

I prefer the latest version of Ford Fusion:comfortable, stylish, economical mileage, and my god the speed. All you need to do is to look at the accelerator and the bugger acts as if its on a race course.Very good manuverability even while going beyond 80kms in most of the towns,I feel this is the best car money could buy in this range. The service aspect is to be examined. The places I have been are not quite worth it and the parts are very expensive. The only Toyota which can be classified among a comfortable car is the Camry. But very expensive. And this fusion gives almost all the facilities camry offers.
I dont like indian hondas and its service stations. So no comments about it.

Go for Maruti baleno , Hyundai Accent or Honda City .
Ford Fusion too looks promising but I doubt if Ford has an adequate Sales and Spares Workshop Network in India .

I think the new Honda City is most successful car in India in recent time. If you can digest its look, it is the one one should go. I have heard that its mileage is exceptional.
