What's the difference between say a Lobster Bisque and a Clam Chowder? And I know that the Lobster and Clams are different but aren't they basically the same?
Any help would be appreciated!!

I live in NE (home of the thick clam chowder). The chowda is always MUCH thicker than a bisque. Chowda also has potatoes, while I have never had a bisque made that way. I prefer a good bread bowl full of clam chowda to a bisque any day.

In my experience (I could be wrong!), bisque is smoother and a thinner soup. Chowda is chunkier with potatoes and usually creamier than bisque.

I waffle on what to call my crab soup. We've called it a bisque, but there is a cubed potato in it to thicken it just a little. The potato usually melts away during cooking.

The difference is that a bisque has puréed vegetables; a chowder does not. Otherwise they are both a thick, creamy soup usually made with shellfish.

chowder usually has potatoes in it and it is made with cream ir milk and could be clam or corn or another type of chowder. A bisque is a creamed based soup. A stew has a lot of different vegetables and meat in it, but generally doesn't have alot of water in it. Soup is generally has a great deal of water in it, withe vegetables and meat.
