Hi Chandra... it is a form of communicating by marking/scenting you with their body, which contain scent glands around their mouth, the ears as well as elsewhere. It's their way of communicating that they like you and taking ownership of you.

Purring also is a form of communicating contentment. However, some cats will purr when they are in pain, extremely frightened or are ready to pass away. For more information about this unique tidbit: http://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&A=1495&S=1&SourceID=18

Face rubbing is a way of scent marking. You can't smell it but other cat's can. You are now marked as the property of your cat. Everybody else stay away. It is a compliment. Purring while being petted is your reward for being a good personal assistant. Purring occurs mostly when a cat is happy or relaxed. (sometimes in stressful times they will purr to calm themselves) A bonk or head butt against your hand is a signal that you should start petting now.
A cat will also face rub scent mark on chairs (this one's mine) corners of the house (I live here) and some of the craziest things (What the hell do you want with a coffee maker?) Cats.

The cat has glands on each side of his or her cheeks that release a scent. They are marking you as theirs and they always seem to do this very affectionately so it's a good thing. They are usually happy when they purr although there have been cats to purr when they are in extreme pain or stress but more often it's a sign of happiness. Cats purr when they are feeling an extreme emotion.

Yes, they are happy when they purr. What a question! Is it your first cat? A really good book to get is the Cat Catalog. It will give you somewhere to look everything up. Make sure you get a little background info on feeding, etc. Your vet will be able to help you. Cats should be vaccinated every 12 months, and wormed every 1 to 3 months depending on where you live (if you're on a farm or in the country it's best to worm every month as there is more danger of getting worms from hunting or other animals).

If he rubs his face on you it can mean two things, depending on which part of HIS face he rubs on you. If it is his forehead and he kind of butts you, he is recognising you as a friend and greeting you warmly. If he rubs the side of his teeth, he is marking you as his property.

Face rubbing is the way cats greet each other, so he is saying "hello" and marking you with the scent glands in his cheeks and jaw, as "his".
Purring is a sign of contentment and peace, although some cats purr under stress as a way to sort of calm themselves down.

For a psychological rationalization, i think of this is because of the fact whilst a cat seems without postpone into yet another cat's eyes, this is taken as a possibility. whilst they seem right into a pal's eyes, tom cat or human, they do the sluggish blinking to enable the different understand this is not a possibility. The nostril rubbing is a organic action of love between cats, and that they are going to do it their human beings.

When the cat rubs his face against yours, it's like a friendly kiss (some people also call that a "kitty kiss"). It _is_ scent marking, or rather, scent mingling - he is getting his scent on you, and your scent on himself. It's trust, and recognition - it means that later, when he is "cleaning" his face, he will contemplate your scent and be well acquainted with you. Including your mood, health state, etc.

Purring is usually a sign of contentment... or an attempt by the cat to content himself (this happens in wounded cats that are known to be in pain - they will purr to calm themselves). But it usually means that he likes it.

(Note, if his tail starts swishing, though, you may want to let him down, just in case... some cats have a low time-in-petting-tollerance threshold.)

Headbutting is a sign of affection. You'll notice cats (ones that are friendly with each other) doing it to each other.

And purring is normally a sign of contentment and happiness, but cats also purr when scared or in pain.
