The scripture usually quoted for this is1Peter 3:18,19: "For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit: By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison".
It says that after Jesus was put to death in the flesh, that His spirit was still alive, and went and preached to the spirits of those from early times that where in prison (Hades) about His death and coming resurrection.

No chapter and verse from me either. The reason is this...here is one of the (too few) times that Christians are willing to suspend the need for chapter and verse and put their own minds and hearts to work. What is the overall story line of the bible? Its about a God of Love revealing himself to his creation, a little at a time, as could be understood and structuring life for them so as to grow them over time into loving people. And the story is told through the people who lived during those times, as well as they could understand and convey the revelations...at least that's my "working model" - subject to further revision or outright rejection at any moment.

You ask for Chapter & verses, How many do you want, Well I will give you at least one, If you can't beleive that then you won't believe the others, since your priority is to try to disprove Christains, Here is one Christain that is not afraid to talk. Isaiah.61:1-2 Now you have to understand, that these people was NOT heathens, They were people that look to Calvary for salvation, Even King David said That God will not leave his soul in Hell. I could give many more verses, but space & time does not allow it. You had people before Christ that was Believers in the LAW, then you had people that was Unbeliever in the law. When Christ was crucified, His Soul went to HELL, OH, OH, you think you got me, NO, Jesus went to Paridise side of hell, Because Before Jesus was crucified Paridise was in the heart of the earth just as was hell the place of torment, Christ went & preached to those souls in hell, ( THE PARIDISE PART OF HELL) Now Paridise is no longer in the heart of the earth.Remember the subject about the rich man die & went to hell, There was a great gulf between the paridise part of Hell, & the tormenting side of hell, Christ went to the paridise part of Hell to Preach to those souls in hell, When Christ rose fom the Dead, He brought every Soul with him that was in Paridise, & he ressurrected those Old Testament saints from the grave. Because the bible said that when Christ rose from the dead that the GRAVES were opened. So every Old Testament Saint was also raised from the dead when Jesus rose from the dead. Those Old Testament Saints looked to Calvary, & we today look back to Calvary for our salvation. I could give you hundreds of verses pertaining to all that I said, So that this one verse & study it.

before Christ, people heard about God through Moses and the old prophets. their sins were dealt with by animal sacrifice, however this only moved their sin debt up for one year. those that died (the saints of old) were taken to a holding place called paradise, when Jesus died and paid the price in full for the sins of the world, he went and retrieved them. read the parable of the rich man that died and was begging for God to reach his brothers so they wouldn't go to hell, God said "they wouldn't listen to Moses and my prophets, they wouldn't listen to me." so no one (either then or now) will be able to stand before God and say "I didn't know" God has always provided a way for everyone to have an equal opportunity to go to heaven.
