Stress use to be the standard answer - but bacteria is the accepted cause now. I am pretty sure the guy that proved this got the Nobel prize last year. He tested the theory on himself - how is that for science?
Here you go:2005
The prize was awarded jointly to:
BARRY J. MARSHALL, and J. ROBIN WARREN for their discovery of the bacterium Helicobacter pylori and its role in gastritis and peptic ulcer disease.

Heliobacter pylori, is a bacteria that in many (50% or more) of the time causes ulcers. This can be detected by a blood test and is treated with a certain antibiotic. Stress can also cause ulcers, and can be fixed with by taking zantac or other acid reducing drugs. Usually a couple of weeks of this type drug can eliminate the problem. If it doesn't, better see a doctor. If you have problems with greasy food then you may have problems with your gallbladder. If you have an ulcer make sure you don't eat too much before laying down, to rule out gastric reflux.

The bacterium, H.pylori is the usual cause of stomach ulcerations and is usually tested by endoscopy and blood work. If you have a diagnosed ulcer, active or not, a visit to the Gastroenterologist is in your future. Asprin, Alcohol, acidic and/or spicy foods, and laying down after eating are all aggrevating. H.pylori is usually transmitted through water or shared between family members (sharing a drink, etc.). After diagnosis an antibiotic for the bacteria is given and usually a proton pump inhibitor, such as Previcid, to reduce stomach acid.

They are saying the main fator is bacteria. Stress still plays a very big part in it. Yes, I have had one. You should stay away from pop and spicy foods, it will make it hurt much worse. Some sites say milk isn't good for it now. They use to think it could really help. I don't know for a fact if it is good or bad. I do know that drinking a glass of milk when my somach hurt and was upset did help. I took a medicine call Protonox and it healed mine. There are many medicines out there for ulcers, but that one is very good. I tried a couple others and it didn't help very much.

Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori) is the most common cause of ulcers. It can be diagnosed with a blood test. However, I will tell you, the cure is worse than the disease.... and even then, there is no guarantee that it goes away. My husband was tested as well, and does NOT have it... so I'm not sure if transmitting it within the family is an accurate statement.
