The question should not be "Why do people smoke?" but rather, "Why did they start?"
They continue to smoke because they :-
Like the taste
It looks cool to the opposite sex
It calms their nerves when under pressure
It gives an illusion of self made strength
and the list goes on and on.
Everyone who smokes refuses to admit that they are addicted to
a terrible drug. They all believe they are so strong (mentaly and physicaly) that they can give up anytime they want to. To admit anything that is contrary to this assumption is to display to everyone else and especially themselves, that they are too weak to fight the addiction.
The truth is these people are weak willed. Not weak in that they cant stop (and they are) but weak in that they couldn't fight the temptation to start. The two biggest reasons that cause people to start is peer pressure and vanity. Those who smoke have no idea how much they stink, for the filthy odour litterally oozes from every pore in their body. Nothing looks worse than a woman smoking and to kiss her is like kissing a rubbish bin and who want to do that?
Any and all forms of tobacco should be totally banned. It creates more expenses health wise than what the government collects from the tax on tobacco products

Whaty ou say is true. The habit is gross, expensive and unhealthy. It is true that there are health issues with tobacco and you should look at these issues as well.
You wouldn't want to do that with the garbage on the lawn. This is littering and you can get charged for doing that.

Good one Imani.
It's called Freedom of Choice.
Yes, we know the risks, as we do with eating too much fat, drinking, crossing the road, etc. But at the end of the day - whatever an individual does in this well-informed society, is their own choice.
Look at all of us, we are addicted to Yahoo Answers and that's got to be bad for our health!!!!

some people smoke as a solution to their problems or sometimes they even smoke just cause they think they look cool but they dont know how stupid and uncool they look. for my suggestion and What i do is 4 u not to smoke it ain't cool is not healthy at all and if u have problems is better to talk it out with someone or write it on a piece of paper and then break the paper in little pieces. if u gonna talk to someone talk to someone u trust and that u would feel conferable talking to but dont smoke or drink for your problems and less Cause u think is cool Cause is not cool..

Some people who have smoke for years smoke as a way of coping with stress, just as an fat person suck down all the food, to cope with stress, just as a person suck down alcohol to cope and run from them self. Never the less they are all bad habits and are all realted to deal with coping with daily life stress.

I’m going to admit the fact that I smoke.. and I’m probably going to become a pariah for it, but I don’t care. As a smoker, I am sick of people talking down to me and chastizing me as thought I were a small child. I know the dangers, I know the risks, I know that I could die someday. Having said that.. do you know that YOU’re going to die someday????
I am sick of being an outcast for smoking. I am sick of all you self-righteous non-smokers bitching at me about it. Why is it acceptable to descriminate and cast aside smokers.. and not people who are…. overweight? You’ll go up to someone who is smoking and ***** about the effects of it to them, but you wouldn’t go up to someone who is overweight and do the same.. when they’re posing just as much a risk to their health as we are.. you wouldn’t even think of it. Think about that.
I smoke, and I know the risks.. so if you see me smoking, don’t come near me because I’m not very tolerant of having other people shove their opinions down my throat and telling me that I’m a bad person because I smoke. I’m not a bad person. I have a habit like everyone else and I like it. I LIKE TO SMOKE. You wouldn’t take candy away from a baby.. so leave me alone.
Did you know that because I smoke, I have a 60% lower risk than non-smokers of developing Parkinson’s Disease and Alzheimer’s Disease? Did you know that because I smoke I have less risk of being depressed? Did you know that because I smoke I have less risk of bad stress? Did you know that a person who has Tourette’s and smokes has less outbursts and muscle tics? Did you know that Tobacco is used to make the Malaria vaccine? Did you know that smoking triggers the release of Dopamine, the hormone that makes you feel good? Did you know that smoking enhances memory, learning and attention? Did you know that smokers recover better from a heart attack than non smokers? Did you know that smoking reduces the risk of endometrial cancer? Did you know that smoking promotes new blood vessel growth? Did you know that smoking can lessen the instances of abdominal pain and bloody diarhea in those with Inflammatory Bowel Disease?
So basically, until the day that I finally do die, I’m going to be happy, have a better attention span, have less stress, have a better memory and have less chances of certain diseases than you. I might die from lung cancer when I’m 55, but the lady down the street who tans on her lawn every sunny day might die from skin cancer when she’s 55… and I don’t hear you bitching at her!
So stick that in your peace pipe and smoke it. Or don’t. I leave your choices up to you.
( I had written another answer.. but I decided to change it.)

Well, most smokers wish they never started, like me. Now that we´re hooked it´s hard to stop.
Why did I start smoking? To prove to other kids they could quit if they wanted to, because I didn´t believe in addiction. So, I smoked as much as I could and then.....couldn´t quit. Very ironic.....

Have YOU ever looked at someone sucking one of those other things? It looks gross as hell, yet the world hankers after it.
Try to learn the skill yourself, you will go far in life.
