They're very close and without checking the brand, we're probably more likely not to care.
There is slight difference in formulation between the two beverages, based on the industryspeak of "diamonds" and "spheres."
Diamonds refers to the sugar content, and Spheres refers to the carbonation content (a/k/a little bubbles). Coke is low diamonds and high spheres, Pepsi is high diamonds low spheres.
The actual formulation differences are very small. Pepsi uses vanillin (Coke uses real vanilla) and has more lemon oil, less orange oil. Because it is slightly sweeter, Pepsi has won a sizable number of soda taste tests, in which people typically respond more favourably to the sweeter concoction.
From a gourmand perspective, less sweeter colas are more appetizing with spicier/flavourful foods, giving Coke the edge there; lighter sweeter colas, like Pepsi are preferable without foods typically (individual results may vary). However, the museumofhoaxes claims an Independent.co.uk study which shows that people couldn't tell differentiate the two; preferences were based on brand favourability.
Personally, i just get the chearper...'cuz that's how I roll, penny-pinchin' style. As a tangent, this question-asker is awesome!

Well I do prefer coke to pepsi, I think with me it's just a familiarity and trust in the brand and I like the fact that you can get so many varieties of Coca cola over pepsi, I like diet coke and I love their lemon and lime and cherry flavours. Coke has been out for such a long time and has so much culture and history behind it as I found out after visiting the coca cola centre/museum in Atlanta, it's really quite interesting. So I love it not just for the drink itself but also for how far it has come from humble beginnings :-)

I certainly can tell the difference. Pepsi has a much better, more "cola" taste. I prefer it. When I ask for "Coke" in restaurants and they say "We only have Pepsi" I cheer! I also hate Coca Cola's advertising, which helps. But the taste is what matters. Incidentally, it changes from country to country, depending on the local water used, I think.
Cheers!

I prefer Coke. Years ago my kids and I did a blindfold taste test. We bought Coke, Pepsi, RC, and every supermarket brand. I got some little anonymous paper cups and my wife secretly poured each into a cup. The idea was that if they couldn't tell the fancy brand from the store-brand and prefer it, we were going to buy only the store-brand for half the price. To my amazement they (and even I) could tell the difference and did prefer the name brands. Coke won and we have drunk tank-car loads of it in the years since.

Hell Yeah you can spot the difference Pepsi is just another commercial brand who is trying to copy Coca Cola. Obviously Coke is way better its the original thing, there is always going to bebrand competitors but I have yet to taste a brand that matches up to Coke

I like pepsi better. Pepsi has a better taste compared to Coke as coke has a higher percentage of carbonate gas and the taste is not as good as pepsi. So, pepsi is much better!!!

I'm 32 now but when i was a child my family only bought coke for some reason. therefore, i am partial to coca cola. when i go to the grocery store, i buy whatever is on sale...including the generic. i can definitely tell the difference between the two. i think Pepsi has a stronger taste

Peps Max is the best (I always drink the ones with no sugar). If you drink Pepsi for a while and then have a Coke, the Coke tastes horrible and leaves a nasty after-taste.
I can cope with either in the pub though once it's got Barcardi in it!

My favourite is Pepsi max, then Pepsi max twist, then diet coke, then diet coke with lemon, then diet coke with cherry then normal pepsi, then normal coke. I don't drink the other varieties.
I can tell the difference.
