The author Samuel Clemens took that as his pen name. The term "mark twain" was a water depth measurement...basically when there was mark twain depth then the river was safe for passage. Clemens worked as a river pilot on the old steamboats.

It's something about the steam boats on the Mississippi. Mark-Two. That's all I remember.
