Hi, coming over from ireland on November 9th, want to take our friends we're staying with over there out for a really nice dinner (plus it'll be my birthday...lol). Want someone really nice and willing to pay about $70 each for three course, is that possible, or do we need to dig deeper into the pockets, thanks!

P.S. Also, can anyone recommend the best way to get from newark airport to yonkers, and on our way back, we'll be leaving from midtown to newark, what time should we leave our hotel when our flight is leaving newark at 10.10pm to ireland. What's the average cost for a cab?

Midtown to Newark is about 20 minutes at that time. Leave a little more than 2 hours before your flight. From Newark airport to Yonkers? Well, I really don't know the best way, but I'd have to guess that you'd take some sort of bus from Newark to Grand Central Station. Then catch the Metronorth to Yonkers. I wouldn't take a cab out to Yonkers, too far, too expensive. A cab will be a little more than $20 to get to Newark from midtown.

I would recommend Smith & Wollensky for steak. If it's a party and you are not so dressed up, just go to the Wollensky Grill which is downstairs, but if you are dressed up, then go upstairs to the fancy part. You need reservations for the nice part, but the grill is just first come first served. Sparks Steak House is also INCREDIBLE, and more upscale and fancier. They have a ridiculous wine collection too and it's sort of historic in that there was a big mob shooting that took place there once. Here's the story on it: http://www.crimelibrary.com/gangsters_outlaws/mob_bosses/gotti/house_12.html

You can also do the "chains", like Ruth's Chris or Mortons. People like Peter Luger's, but you have to pay in cash, and I've heard that it's overrated.

My vote is for Spark's or Smith and Wollensky.

The Only people who have any idea what they are talking about said Smith and Wollenskys and Old Homestead -- They are good but not my personal favorites -- the good ones are all expensive -- $70 is cutting it at little close and if you like a nice bottle of wine with you're meal no way.

I like Keen's Chop House -- and you can save money by eating in the Pub Room were you can get smaller cuts of the same great steaks --- the ones you get in the Dining Room are huge. Also, being Irish it might remind you a little of home.

Old Homestead would be a more "New York" kind of experience, it's in the "Meatpacking District" -- but I think it's the most expensive. Also, I have heard mixed reviews.

Other choices are the Palm or the Post House, the Post House has the best decor and is consersidered more "woman friendly" or Cite -- they have a deal on wine that can save you $ - $69 Pri Fixe and all the wine you can drink included!

You can check out all these place at the link below.

A cab to Newark is going to cost you around $40 from Manhattan. If you left at 7 PM that would get you to newark at around 8. To get to Yonkers from Newark I would take the Airport Bus that drops you across the Street from Grand Central Station and you can get a train to Yonkers from there.

The BEST steakhouse in NYC is the old homestead.

http://nymag.com/listings/restaurant/old-homestead-steakhouse/

I love steak and have been to many, this is the old school, hardwood experiece.
YOu might have to dig deeper yes. Depends if you drink.
Yonkers by public transport?
The metro north goes there, depending. It orriginates from grand central.
Then the last part: your taking a cab? I know the inbound flat fee is 60 bucks to the city. theres no outbound flat fee, but i would figure its the same. Public transport might be better. There shouldnt be traffic at that time so i;d leave just an hr for travel so, 7 or so? Im always early for planes.

The East Side is up and coming. You may have heard of CBGB's, a club that once hosted bands like Blondie, Velvet Underground, and the Ramones. That whole area has some pretty good places to eat within your price range. Franks restaurant on 2nd and 4th, from my experience, has fablous food. Their salmon is out of this world. You don't need to spend that much on steak, especially in the city. The absolute best steak sandwhich is at this litte apartment like place, 2nd story, on 2nd and 8th. All the locals know the name, I just know the location. It's near this other neat place that only serves french fries with a salad bar full of different condiments. Avoid the famous Irish bar down there, Mc something. Not worth it. Try not to break the bank of food. It's not necessary. There's great food on every corner. Save your money for something else like clubs or museums. Have a blast!

Go to www.restaurants.com and learn where's a good place to eat. I was just in that city and it's very clean and friendly, so not to worry, but I do hear there are pick-pockets around, so watch your purse. As for restaurants, you should be able to find a bunch of good restaurants for $70 a meal. As for traffic, we didn't have a hard time, but do leave extra time just in case. For a 10:10 flight, I'd say you'd need to be at the airport by 8:10, as for the trip...I'd ask a taxi driver how long it would take, they know best.

Have fun and good luck! Happy Birthday!

Oh my god, are any of these people even from New York?

Spark's, Smith & Wollensky's, Palm, Ruth's Chris????

All of these steak houses pale in comparison to Peter Lugers Steak House in Brooklyn. I can't believe nobody's recommended it. It is only ranked the numbered one steakhouse in New York by Zagat's four years in a row.

I've been to many, many steakhouses and the only one that ever topped Peter Luger's is in Chicago.

in case you like steak and are vacationing nyc and want the authentic journey, there isn't any substitute for a Peter Luger's porterhouse. it fairly is in brooklyn, yet not a processes in any respect. you're safest wager for paying for there is to take a cab. in case you like public delivery, i could advise attending to the long island area of the williamsburg bridge and taking a cab from there. playstation -This in nyc, stay far flung from chain eating places (eg. the sizzler and ruth's chris solutions given).
