According to the source below, the word "dude" was created in 1883 by some New Yorkers.

The vogue word of 1883, originally used in ref. to the devotees of the "aesthetic" craze, later applied to city slickers, especially Easterners vacationing in the West (dude ranch first recorded 1921). Surfer slang application to any male is first recorded c.1970. Female form dudine (1883) has precedence over dudess (1885).

I use tha word "Dude" and I like it! Do u have a problem with tha word and if so why?? Maybe u should ask questions that are of more importance like maybe.. why tha hell isnt more being done for tha starving children and parents in Affrica etc.. ????

in 1988 charles r. dude was attending a star trek convention and an announcement was made that " mr. dude is wanted at registration, dude at registration" and it picked up from there.
